ANAMBRA ELECTION: INEC Reschedules Election In 65 Polling Units

In another evidence that today’s governorship election in Anambra State was marred by extensive irregularities, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced this evening that it has rescheduled voting in 65 wards in the town of Obosi till tomorrow (Sunday). Obosi is in Idemili North local government area of the state till tomorrow (Sunday). The Resident Electoral Commissioner for Anambra, Chukwuemeka Onukogu, made this known in a statement released to journalists in Awka, the Anambra State capital. Mr. Onukogu, a retired professor, said the rescheduled election will hold tomorrow at the Obosi registration area, ward 07, between 8 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. “We are sorry for any inconveniences experienced,” said the INEC official.

Prospective voters allegedly attacked the INEC Electoral Officers for failing to present the result sheet to them before beginning accreditation. At Afor Agulu Square, Awka South, reputed to be the largest ward in Anambra, it is rowdy as the counting is already in progress. Voters are anxious. They are eager to know the result. At Central School 1, Akpakaogwe, in Ogidi, Idemili North, an election officer said she was beaten up by the youth at the polling station.

SSS Agents Detain El Rufai In Awka Hotel As APC Decries Widespread Electoral Malpractice

SaharaReporters has learned that scores of agents of the State Security Services (SSS) today invaded a hotel where Nasir El-Rufai, a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and now a top official of the All Progressives Congress (APC) lodged overnight. The officials of the SSS, Nigeria’s secret police, refused to let Mr. El-Rufai to leave Finotel Hotel in Awka to monitor the gubernatorial election going on in Anambra State today. In a brief telephone interview with SaharaReporters, Mr. El-Rufai confirmed that the SSS had barricaded the gates of the hotel where he is staying and prevented reporters as well as lawyers from having access to him. The former FCT minister, who is the APC’s deputy national secretary, told SaharaReporters that he remained in confinement at the time of speaking with our correspondent.
