In Case You Missed It: Watch The Presidential Debate Between GEJ and 11 Other Presidential Aspirants

Earlier today, President Goodluck Jonathan participated in the presidential debate organised by the Nigeria Elections Debate Group (NEDG). The two most popular presidential candidates in the forthcoming elections (Gen. Buhari and President Jonathan ) failed to have a face off at the debates for the second campaign in a row. However, President Jonathan, who was obviously proud of himself at the NEDG debate, took to his Facebook page to say: “I am convinced that any one who desires to lead Nigerians must first be prepared to address issues raised by Nigerians. I also believe we must encourage a culture of debate and conversation to grow our democracy. GEJ.” See his Facebook post below: Post by Goodluck Jonathan .

Controversy as allegations of “shady deals” rock Nigeria Election Debate Group

Image
The Nigeria Election Debate Group, NEDG, has organised presidential and vice presidential debates since 1999, but fresh claims have emerged questioning the independence and partisan nature of the group. The debates, the final lap of the series of debates organised by the NEDG, is holding on March 22, according to the organisers. But there have been allegations that the group is actually a one-man show run by Raymond Dokpesi, the Chairman of DAAR Communications Limited (owners of Africa Independent Television, AIT), who uses it as a bargaining tool for private gains and political advantage. When it was incorporated in 2011, the NEDG listed six organisations as shareholders, each with a representative. They include Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria, BON, represented by Abubakar Aji; DAAR Communications, represented by Tony Akiotu; Nigeria Union of Journalists, represented by Mohammed Garba; Alliance for Credible Election represented by Emma Ezeazu; Nigeria Guild

How President Jonathan’s Airport shuttles weaken Abuja security, endanger residents

Image
On Saturday, March 21, President Goodluck Jonathan and his campaign team flew out of Abuja in two aircrafts for another round of vote solicitation in Kano and neighbouring Katsina ahead of the March 28 national elections. Four hours before the President left his home at the Presidential villa that Saturday, over 200 police officers and about a hundred soldiers were withdrawn from their beats around the nation’s capital and made to line the about 40 kilometres route to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, some standing with their rifles on their shoulders, some sitting on pavements, stones and bare ground and others snoring away in patrol cars. The police wouldn’t say how many officers are deployed daily to patrol and secure Abuja, but residents believe the nation’s capital is under-policed, with some saying they have never seen a police officer patrol their areas. Yet, that Saturday, hundreds of officers, who could have patrolled streets to check crimes were m

Image
There appears to be a crack in the ranks of the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State as the state’s Deputy Governor, Mr. Tele Ikuru, on Sunday, announced his defection from the party to the Peoples Democratic Party. Ikuru, who has worked with the State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, for about eight years, may be received by President Goodluck Jonathan at a PDP stakeholders’ meeting in Port Harcourt on Monday. The news of Ikuru’s defection is coming barely six days to the presidential election. Ikuru had, in a statement in Port Harcourt on Sunday, described the APC as party of “rebels, insurgents and anarchists clothed in robes of pretence and deceit.” The deputy governor was said to have been in a battle of supremacy with the State APC Chairman, Dr. Davies Ikanya, who is from the same Andoni Local Government Area with him. Speculations of the deputy governor’s defection to the PDP became rife on Sunday when a Government House source confirmed his

Trending Video: Jonathan Admits He Is Not In Charge

Image
In his famous BBC interview, where he expressed optimism that he would win this weekend’s presidential election, President Goodluck Jonathan also made an admission: he is not in charge of the military and he could not speak for them. President Jonathan surely forgot that he is the commander-in-chief of the Nigerian armed forces. His admission of powerlessness followed the interviewer’s barrage of questions on what the government used the yearly $5 billion security budget for, the whereabouts of the kidnapped Chibok schoolgirls and why it took so long for Nigeria, the ‘giant of Africa’, to embark on retaking territories lost to Boko Haram. President Jonathan did not have any convincing explanation, except to say: I am not in charge.
