Orji-Uzo Kalu Canvases for Two Party System in Nigeria

The former Governor of Abia state, Chief Orji Uzor Kalu yesterday maintained that a two party structure is the best for Nigeria as it will go a long way in promoting healthy rivalry and virile democratic culture among the diverse Nigerian culture.

Chief Kalu made this known when he visited the governor of Niger state, bared his mind on the best political structure for Nigeria as part of the formers' nationwide peace consultative tour.

Two party system of government, he said is the best for Nigeria's heterogeneous nature because it will promote platform for alternative viable opposition and further entrench democratic norms in the nation's polity.

As a way of salvaging the current political situation in Nigeria, Kalu argued that Nigeria and her citizenry should learn to imbibe democratic tenets and deemphasize on acts capable of polarizing the country based on political differences.

"The country is in a cross roads and it is not a time for partisan politics, but unfortunately some people see what is happening as fun and they are laughing with it", Kalu said as he criticized the level at which some notable from a section of Nigeria seems insensitive to what is happening which he believes is affecting the economy of the country.

According to the former Governor, "Despite the growth of the country's Gross Domestic Products (GDP), the capacity utilization in Nigeria is very low and the current security challenges will further aggravate the situation".

Kalu who denied any political undertone to his peace mission argued that just as any patriotic and right thinking Nigerian would feel disturbed about current trend he decided to join hands to salvage the situations by taking the message of peace across some notable Nigerians.

According to the former Abia state Governor, "I am disturbed just as any other Nigerian who have the interest of Nigeria at heart on the way things are going, we should support all those in power to halt the current dangerous drift in the country".

"All politicians, civil servants and business men and women must rise up because this country belongs to all of us and if it is burning, we must find solutions towards quenching the fire", Uzor Kalu further pointed out.

In his remarks, Governor Aliyu commended the former Governor for his consultations, saying that all right thinking Nigerians are worried, adding that all those who had held office of responsible should come together to salvage the situation.

"Whatever affects one person in Nigeria affects everybody. You may hear a about a death from a distance and pretend not to hear but believe me it affects you as well", Aliyu said adding that the kidnapping of over 100 school girls in Chibok, Borno state is not only reverberating in the area but throughout the country and beyond".
