The former governor of Nigerias central bank has spoken exclusively to Al Jazeera following his sacking last week by President Goodluck Jonathan. Sanusi Lamido Sanusi was fired after he revealed that around 20bn in public money from oil sales is missing. Sanusi said the money disappeared in just the last 19 months. The money was supposed to be given to the Central Bank by the state oil company. He said he would not be surprised if he is jailed for speaking out. Al Jazeeras Yvonne Ndege reports from Lagos.

On Tuesday Feb 11th, 20 young women were  abducted  by Boko Haram members after a raid at the village of Konduga in Borno State. 2 weeks later, nothing has been heard about the abducted women. Former VP Atiku Abubakar took to twitter some hours ago asking the President to show concern about the missing women. Security agencies aren't saying anything. Are they even looking for them?

I have just been sent the following statement by the Nigerian finance ministry, which I understand it is putting out later today. I am going to quote most of it, because it is gripping, in the context of the the decision of the Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan to suspend the central bank governor, Lamido Sanusi. The gloss from the ministry goes like this: "The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has asked for urgent action with regard to an independent forensic audit of conflicting claims of unaccounted funds made by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mallam Sanusi Lamdio Sanusi". And here is a direct statement from Dr Okonjo-Iweala, the finance minister:

She said that 4 men came into the house where he was praying for her and ordered him to take off his clothes after which pictures of him naked were taken. Men suspected to be members of the Islamic Sect, Boko Haram, today Tuesday Feb 25th launched an attack on students of the Federal Government College Buni-Yadi Yobe state, killing 29 students, Hausa Service BBC reports. Some buildings in the school were also reportedly razed. Sources at the school said the men invaded the school in the early hours of this morning while the students were still sleeping in their hostels and slaughtered them. Guns were not used in the attack as was the sect's usual practice, probably to avoid the attention of people. They used machetes.  The Federal Government College Buni Yadi is a co-educational institution located some 55km south of Damaturu the Yobe State capital. This is the fourth attack on secondary schools since the inception of the sect members.

President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday said  that  Mallam Lamido Sanusi  was still the  Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. Fielding questions from a panel of journalists during  the presidential media chat in  Abuja, Jonathan  said Sanusi would only cease to be  governor of the bank if found guilty of infractions levelled against him. But he was quick to describe as “unfortunate,” the controversy surrounding his suspension of the Kano State-born banker. He reminded critics of his action that he had absolute powers to do so  without recourse to the Senate. The President  said he could only revert to the  Senate  if he intended to sack the governor completely. He added that Sanusi’s  suspension was not in any way connected with the alleged $20bn missing funds from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.

The poor state of power supply across the country has been linked to the serious financial challenges facing investors who bought into the nation’s electricity distribution companies. According to the Federal Government, the Discos lack the financial muscle that will ensure efficient distribution of the generated electricity. The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, Dr. Sam Amadi, stated that the Discos needed adequate financing to facilitate their operations. Amadi spoke on Monday at the headquarters of NERC in Abuja while receiving a delegation from the United States Agency for International Development/Power Africa. The chairman, in a statement from the commission, outlined the immediate and long-term challenges facing the sector, including “financing to facilitate further improvement, especially with regards to the distributions companies.”
