Photos: Meet the HIV positive Malawian man who is paid $4 to $7 to have unprotected sex with underaged girls

Image
Eric Avina pictured above is a middle aged HIV positive Malawian man whose responsibility it is to conduct "sexual cleansing" for underaged and also matured women in Nsanje district in southern Malawi.  Avina in his community is referred to as Hyena, a traditional title given to a man hired by communities in several remote parts of southern Malawi to provide what's called sexual "cleansing".  If a man dies, for example, his wife is required by tradition to sleep with Avina before she can bury him. If a woman has an abortion, she is expected to sleep with Avina to undergo cleansing. Also teenage girls, after their first menstruation, are made to have sex over a three-day period with Avina to mark their passage from childhood to womanhood. HEALTH TIPS: Chicken odour 'prevents malaria' research in Ethiopia finds

Image
The smell from a live chicken could help protect against malaria, researchers have found. Ethiopian and Swedish scientists discovered that malarial mosquitoes tend to avoid chickens and other birds. The experiments, conducted in western Ethiopia, included suspending a live chicken in a cage near a volunteer sleeping under a bed net. Last year malaria killed nearly 400,000 people in Africa, the UN says. Infection and death rates are declining but health officials are continuing to look for new ways to prevent the spread of the disease. The malaria parasite, which initially hides in the liver before going into the bloodstream, is carried from person to person by mosquitoes when they drink blood. The scientists, whose research was published in the Malaria Journal, concluded that as mosquitoes use their sense of smell to locate an animal they can bite there must be something in a chicken's odour that puts the insects off. Ogbeh said the frequent clashes between farmers and herdsmen had taken a worrisome dimension, saying the development is capable of scaring away foreign investors. “Many more farmers are coming in, including foreign investors, and they stand the risk of being subjected to this kind of humiliation. So, we are talking with ministry of interior that we have to put measures in place,” he said. “In other countries of the world you may have noticed that people live on their farms; you hardly see a farmer who lives in the city. He lives on the farm with his family, you cannot do that here. They will come and take you, your wife and children in the name of ki...
