Canadian university offers Cristiano Ronaldo course

A Canadian university is offering fans of Cristiano Ronaldo the opportunity to take a course on the Real Madrid star. The University of British Columbia Okanagan is enrolling for a fourth-year sociology module on Ronaldo due to his popularity and influence on Portuguese and global society. Luis LM Aguiar, associate professor of sociology in UBC Okanagan’s Irving K. Barber School of Arts and Sciences, said: "Sociology is nothing if not the delving into the processes of structuring identities and experiences and exposing the social forces that push these processes. "In this case, I'm interested in how Ronaldo has been used to construct several discourses about who he is, what makes him distinct as a footballer, what is his relationship to Portugal, Madeira (his hometown) and indeed Portuguese identity." ISIS claims US female captive has been killed in Jordanian air strike

May or may not be true but ISIS is claiming female American aide worker who they've been holding hostage for a while, 26 year old Kayla Jean Mueller was killed today February 6th during Jordan's retaliation airstrikes on the group in Northern Syria. ISIS claimed the woman was being held in the building pictured right and shared pics of it's destruction, claiming it was destroyed by Jordan's airstrike "The failed Jordanian aircraft killed an American female hostage. No mujahid was injured in the bombardment, and all praise is due to Allah.” the group said in a statement released on their site. ISIS had been demanding $6.6 million for Kayla's release. She's the last American held by the group. Jordan had promised to destroy ISIS and step up airstrikes after the group released the shocking video of the brutal killing of their pilot. Kayla's alleged death hasn't been verified by independent sources.

Painter arrested for raping 3 year old girl and trying to compensate family with N100k

The police have arraigned 25-year-old painter, Hamzat Afeez, for allegedly raping a three-year-old girl in the Egbeda area of Lagos State. He was arraigned on one count of rape at the Ebute Meta Chief Magistrate’s Court. Punch Metro had reported how Afeez allegedly took the victim’s younger sister into his room while their mother washed clothes in the house. The victim was said to have followed Afeez into his room in a bid to play with her sister.Our correspondent was told that the suspect raped her.She was said to have narrated the incident to her parents, who alerted policemen from the Gowon Estate Police Station. The suspect, in an attempt to cover up the case, offered to compensate the victim’s family with N100, 000 as payment for her medical bills. Adamawa Police Uncover 19 Bombs Inside Bush

Nineteen giant bombs have been discovered by the Adamawa state police. According to the police, the bombs were found hidden in a bush in the state, Punch reports. It was gathered that the bombs were ready to be detonated by suspected suicide bombers in some strategic places of the state capital.  When contacted, the state’s Police Commissioner, Gabriel Adeji, confirmed the bomb-haul in Yola.  ThisDay reports that the police CP said the bombs were uncovered inside the bush of Song Local Government area of the state following an intelligence report.  He noted that the police had been trailing the activities of the insurgents following media reports last week that some suspected members of the Boko Haram sect were planning to bomb the state capital.  On Thursday, February 5, they got a hint from an informant on the whereabouts of the bombs.  He added that the bombs had the capacity to bring down a ten storey building and also kill sev

INEC to meet tomorrow to decide whether or not to shift the elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, says it will meet with chairmen and secretaries of all registered political parties, and Resident Electoral Commissioners, RECs tomorrow Saturday 7th, to decide whether to go ahead with the general elections billed for February 14 and 28. A statement released by Mr Kayode Idowu, the spokesperson of INEC Chairman, Attahiru Jega, states that after the meeting, “the Commission will address a press conference to brief the nation on its decision with regard to whether or not the general elections will hold as currently scheduled”. Boko Haram carries out first attack on Niger Republic

According to AFP, Boko Haram members this afternoon launched their first attack in Niger Republic. They attacked Basso, a border town with Nigeria. A resident of the town who spoke with AFP said; "We can hear the sound of weapons all around the town, often very near our windows. There is the noise of heavy weapons and of light arms, making our houses shake,". It is not clear whether Boko Haram were battling against Niger's security forces or troops from Chad, also stationed at Bosso.

Fayose rubbishes APC's audio clips on Ekiti election, says; 'it is fake'

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has described the audio clip released by the All Progressives Congress (APC), through  its media organ, SaharaReporters as fake, saying; he never held any meeting with anyone to rig the June 21, 2014 election, suggesting that his voice & those of others could have been faked using technology like Natural Voices. He said the audio clip was APC's new calculated attempt to discredit the election results, having failed woefully both at the poll and the tribunal. Gang kills 68-year-old for hitting man with fetish ring

A gang in the Ketu area of Lagos State has tortured to death a 68-year-old man, Nasirudeen Ajawesola, for allegedly hitting a resident of the area with a fetish ring. It was gathered that the resident, who could not be identified as of press time, subsequently fell unconscious. The incident happened on Osokoya Street, Ketu.The police were, however, able to apprehend a member of the group, Abiola Ogunmola, who was the elder brother of the resident. Punch  Metro gathered that on the fateful day, the deceased’s first son, a vulcaniser, had ran home to call his father to report that he was being forced to participate in a community work going on in the area. When Ajawesola arrived at the scene, an argument was said to have started, which led to a fight. In the ensuing confusion, Ajawesola allegedly slapped the brother of the suspect with a fetish ring. Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have recovered 19.8 kilogrammes of dried weeds, said to be cannabis sativa, from two friends; 30-year-old Sandra Ebere and Maureen Obidike, 33. Punch  Metro gathered that the suspects were arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos State during the screening of passengers on an Etihad flight en route to Dubai, United Arab Emirate. It was learnt that the drug was packaged into about 80 parcels and concealed inside foodstuffs and bottles.Our correspondent gathered that Ebere, who studied Economics, told investigators that her travel agent in Dubai directed her to smuggle the drug as a prerequisite for a free visa. She said, “I used to export foodstuffs to Dubai since 2012. Each time I go to Dubai, I stay for two months and come back because I have no permanent visa.
