Mourinho's new Drogba: Why Diego Costa is the 'real striker' Chelsea need

Image
The Brazil-born attacker has been earmarked by the Blues as the man to lead their flagging forward line next season. So just what will he bring to Stamford Bridge? Jose Mourinho wasn't happy. The Portuguese hit out at the match officials after his 77-match unbeaten league run at home came to an end with a surprise defeat against Sunderland on Saturday. But instead of a favourable referee, what Chelsea needed more than anything was a world-class striker. That's nothing new. Mourinho has complained all season about his forwards and if this term ends with narrow failure in the Premier League and the Champions League (just as the season started with defeat on penalties in the Uefa Super Cup back in August), it will be because of the Blues' failings in front of goal. Top-class centre-forwards aren't easy to come by, however, and that was one position Mourinho was never able to strengthen sufficiently at Real Madrid. Back for a second spell at Stamford Bridge, he is lo...

Chief Okuneye, a septuagenarian, was said to have just finished reading the Bible lesson for the day in church when the gun men stormed the church, headed to where he sat and shot him in the head in the presence of the pastor and members of the congregation. How heartless can men be: It was said that the late Chief Okuneye had metaphysical power, and that it was for this reason that the assailants waited for him to go to church after he would have removed the charms protecting him and their game plan worked out...

Moyes had already been informed of his fate and thanked club staff at the training complex in anticipation of his departure. The players were not present at the time. It emerged on Monday that United's owners, the Glazer family, had lost patience with Moyes after a dismal season that has seen the reigning Barclays Premier League champions slump to seventh in the table. The final straw was Sunday's 2-0 defeat at Everton, their 11th in the Barclays Premier League this season, and a result that left the title holders 13 points off the Champions League places.
