The fundamental rights to personal liberty and privacy of the home of every Nigerian citizen are constitutionally guaranteed. As fundamental rights are not absolute they may be breached in accordance with a procedure permitted by law. Hence, by virtue of section 146 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, the residence of any citizen can be searched with a warrant duly signed by a Judge, Magistrate or Justice of the Peace. Section 149 thereof imposes a duty on any person residing in any building which is liable to be searched to allow "free and unhindered access to it and afford all reasonable facilities for its search."  Last Thursday, a team of State Security Service (SSS) officials, armed with a search warrant, attempted to execute the warrant on the private residence of Col. Sambo Dasuki Dasuki, in Abuja in the Federal Capital Territory. Convinced that he did not deserve to have his house searched Col Dasuki refused to allow the SSS officia

In a statement signed by its Deputy chairman, Dr Dozie Ikedife, the pro-Biafra group said that the pressure group did not believe in threat or wars, illegality, insults and abuse of individuals or groups in pursuit of self-determination for indigenous people anywhere. “The leadership of the indigenous people of Biafra under the customary laws and in obedience to the laws of Nigeria do not subscribe to violence, rough or abusive language. Fayose, who took to his twitter handle @GovAyoFayose on Sunday, said even if Tinubu was INEC boss, the opposition APC in the state will lose any election conducted in Ekiti because it was not on ground. Okonjo-Iweala denies sending list of corrupt deals done by GEJ administration to Buhari

Image
There were reports last week that former Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala sent a list of corrupt deals done during the past administration to President Buhari. Dr Okonjo-Iweala, released a statement through her media aide, Paul Nwabuikwu, discrediting the report. The statement below The recent report by the integrity-challenged website, Saharareporters and some other media that former Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has handed over a “dossier of corrupt deals” perpetrated by the Jonathan administration to President Buhari is completely false and without foundation. This sponsored lie is part of the political attack by the pay masters of Saharareporters against Dr Okonjo-Iweala.   These attacks will continue given that these individuals are bent on a political and personal vendetta against her. Why are they angry? It is simply because she tried to bring integrity and transparency to the management of Nigeria’s public finances which obviously did not s

Image
President Muhammadu Buhari is on his way to the United States to honour an invitation for a state visit to Washington, extended to him by President Barack Obama on June 25. Mr. Buhari would be in the U.S. for four days, meeting President Obama, top level officials of the American government, American business leaders, Nigerians in the Diaspora and members of the American War College Class of 1980 in which he was a participant. But let’s flash back to 1971, 44 years ago, when a Nigerian leader – Yakubu Gowon – diplomatically spurned the kind of invitation Mr. Buhari is honouring today. [ We are publishing this just for historical purpose only ]. According to declassified diplomatic documents seen by PREMIUM TIMES, the 37th President of the United States, Richard Nixon, had written to then Nigeria Head of State, Major General Gowon, requesting him to make a state visit to his country in October of that year. Buhari Plans To Imprison Jonathan- Group, As Femi Adeshina Denies Plot

Image
A civil rights organisation, Vanguards of Nigeria’s Democracy, on Saturday raised the alarm over alleged moves by President Muhammadu Buhari to “investigate, malign and imprison” ex-President Goodluck Jonathan on trumped-up charges. The group accused the President and his All Progressives Congress-led administration of anti-Niger Delta tendencies. The group referred to the ongoing controversy between a former Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole over Excess Crude Account and allegations as a ploy to get at former President Goodluck Jonathan. But the Special Adviser to the President (Media and Publicity), Mr. Femi Adesina, described the allegation by the group as mere speculation. Adesina asked why people would dwell on speculations when nothing concrete has been established against former President Jonathan. He said, “All these are speculations and I cannot react to speculations because there is nothing concrete

$182m Halliburton Scandal: Buhari orders preparation of case-file

Image
As President Muhammadu Buhari travels to the United States (US) today to engage President Barack Obama in talks on economic, security, financial and anti-graft issues, it has emerged that he has ordered the preparation of the case-file that would lead to the prosecution of the indicted persons in the $182 million Halliburton bribery scandal.  Sunday Vanguard gathered that the President’s directive followed the requirement by the US government of evidence to show that Buhari was ready to prosecute the suspects in Nigeria for their roles in the bribery scandal before it could partner other European countries in releasing the $141million dollars allegedly looted from Nigeria and lodged in various overseas banks. According to top security sources, Buhari, based on the outcome of investigations by the panel set up to look into the scandal, is scheduled to tell Americans officials during this week’s visit that all those indicted, including former Heads of St

I don’t deserve this from APC because I helped them to power, says ex-NSA Dasuki

Image
According to THENATION , The former National Security Adviser, Mr. Sambo Dasuki, yesterday raised the alarm over what he saw as plot by the State Security Service (SSS) to implicate him in alleged security breaches. He said Nigerians should know that the invasion of his house by the SSS was a sheer witch-hunt. He said it was sad that the operatives of the security agency broke into his ailing father’s house in Sokoto and broke his safe. Dasuki, who spoke exclusively with our correspondent on the phone yesterday, said he does not deserve such treatment because as the National Security Adviser he did not maltreat any Nigerian. He said he was subjected to a 12-hour ordeal from 6pm on Thursday till 6am on Friday. “The SSS operatives came in two trucks with a search warrant from a Magistrate Court. The warrant gave them the power to search for ‘illegal weapons and any incriminating item.’ You can imagine what that is supposed to mean. “I left office on Tuesday an
