Tension as Jimoh Moshood leads 30 policemen to hospital treating Melaye

J imoh Moshood, spokesman of the Nigeria Police Force, led at least 30 armed policemen to Zankili Medical Center, Mabushi, Abuja, where Dino Melaye, senator representing Kogi west, is being treated. Melaye was admitted into the hospital after he attempted to escape from police custody. There was tension in the hospital as the policemen arrested two persons — a man and a woman — said to be members of staff for unknown offence. The policemen summoned the official of the hospital and demanded to know where Melaye was. It is not yet clear if they have located the place the senator is at the moment. Anyone seen walking around is asked to identify themselves by the fierce-looking policemen or risk getting g picked up. The road leading to the hospital is barricaded by the gun-wielding security operatives. Source: TheCable

World Bank to disburse N8.6 billion to youth in 23 states

T he World Bank, through the FADAMA III Additional Financing (AFII) Programme, will soon disburse N8.6 billion to 5,916 youth across the country in the Graduate Unemployment Youths Support Scheme (FADAMA GUYS). Kwaji Daguru, the Chairman of FADAMA GUYS Implementation Committee, disclosed this in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Tuesday. Mr Daguru, who is also Procurement Specialist for FADAMA III (AFII) Programme, said that the programme targeted 5,916 youth in 23 states to improve the country’s agricultural production. The states are Abia, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Ebonyi, Ekiti, Jigawa, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Niger, Ogun and Ondo States. Others include Osun, Oyo, Plateau, Sokoto, Taraba and Zamfara states as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). S enator Dino Melaye, who was arrested Tuesday morning by operatives of the Nigeria Police drawn from its Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS,is at present being moved to Lokoja. The embattled senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District under the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, is expected to be paraded later this evening among other hardened criminals who implicated him in the crime that necessitated his arrest. Vanguard learnt that the senator who was taken into SARS detention facility, located opposite the old Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN junction along the Area 1 expressway, Abuja, was moved out around 12 noon today in police vehicle heavily manned by SARS operatives. T he alleged victim of sex-for-mark, Monica Osagie, is currently appearing before the committee raised by the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, to probe the allegations against Prof. Richard Akindele. The committee is sittng at the Pro-Chabellor’s Lodge on the campus but only Osagie and her lawyer were allowed into the venue which is manned by the OAU security personnel. SARS Operatives arrest Dino Melaye

T he police have arrested Senator Dino Melaye ((APC, Kogi) after a 24-hour siege to his home in Abuja. Checks indicated that the embattled lawmaker has been taken to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad facility where he would be grilled for allegedly arming some thugs to disrupt Kogi State. The police had claimed that Melaye was being sought for not honouring the summons extended to him. Melaye had earlier said that he would make himself available to the police today. The senator representing Kogi West disclosed this via his Twitter handle some minutes ago, shortly before he was arrested and forcefully taken away by the police. “I will make myself available to the police today. My resolve to speak the truth and defend the poor masses of NIGERIA is Total. We shall overcome!!!,” he posted. The police had laid seige to his Shanga, Maitama, Abuja residence since Monday afternoon. They also barricaded the street and prevented visitors from entering the lawmaker’s
