Armed herdsmen lay siege to Enugu-Nsukka Road

Image
ARMED herdsmen have continued to launch attacks on motorists and passengers plying Enugu-Nsukka Road almost on daily basis, Vanguard’s investigation has shown. The bandits, suspected to be Fulani herdsmen, have left several passengers wounded, while others have lost cash and valuables. Narrating their ordeal to Vanguard, some of the victims called on the police to beef up security on dreaded portions of the road. In the latest attack, a victim, who identified herself as Mrs. Salome Nnadi, a teacher at Queen of the Rosary Secondary School, Nsukka, recounted how they were ambushed and robbed along Ugwuogo-Nike-Opi Road, a few kilometres from Enugu. She said: “We were returning from Enugu on Thursday, around 3p.m. On reaching a sharp bend, four armed men dressed in Fulani regalia suddenly appeared from a near-by bush. “They ransacked the commuter bus, carting away mobile phones, jewelleries and cash from passengers.” She added that the bandits also inflicted machete wounds on

Joshua, has again fired at several commentators, describing their alleged negative commentaries as an act of destroying Nigeria’s image before the international community. His words: “I just came back from Colombia. Although, I intended to travel from there to another country, but I came back home because there is a cloud that covers Nigeria. I want

A Must Read: Doctor Who Discovered Ebola In 1976 Fears "Unimaginable Tragedy"

Image
Professor Piot, as a young scientist in Antwerp, you were part of the team that discovered the  Ebola  virus in 1976. How did it happen? I still remember exactly. One day in September, a pilot from Sabena Airlines brought us a shiny blue Thermos and a letter from a doctor in Kinshasa in what was then Zaire. In the Thermos, he wrote, there was a blood sample from a Belgian nun who had recently fallen ill from a mysterious sickness in Yambuku, a remote village in the northern part of the country. He asked us to test the sample for yellow fever. These days, Ebola may only be researched in high-security laboratories. How did you protect yourself back then? We had no idea how dangerous the virus was. And there were no high-security labs in Belgium. We just wore our white lab coats and protective gloves. When we opened the Thermos, the ice inside had largely melted and one of the vials had broken. Blood and glass shards were floating in the ice water. We fished the other, int

Nigeria Talks Tough, Warns South Africa Over Seized $5.7 Million Arms Money

Image
Nigeria responded with fury Monday after South African authorities confiscated a second tranche of funds meant for arms purchase to fight the extremist Boko Haram sect, denying the deal was unlawful and warning South Africa of its investment in Nigeria. The warning came after the South African government seized US$5.7 million wired by the Nigerian government through a bank to an arms dealer in that country. South Africa’s Asset Forfeiture Unit of the National Prosecuting Authority said the money, about N952 million, was the proceed of illegal transactions, according to local paper, City Press. The seizure was the second in nearly three weeks, coming after authorities there froze $9.3 million transported in cash by two Nigerians and an Israeli for arms purchase. At the time, South Africa said the transaction violated its laws on movement of cash. In a terse reaction to what appears a potential diplomatic spat between the two countries, the Nigerian government denied t

Kemi Omotoyinbo's death was very preventable - Sola Fajana

Image
Dancer Kemi Omotoyinbo died on October 1st after being in and out of labour for several days at a private hospital in Lagos. (Read  here ). Wellness doctor, Sola Fajana says her death was preventable. Read what he wrote below... I read about Kemi Omotoyinbo's death some few days back and I still feel so much burden to write about it. She is a popular dancer and died during child birth. Her friends took to social media to condemn the managing Doctor on how she was treated and refusal to perform the surgery due to unavailability of funds. If I were the Doctor I would have gone ahead to save her life but my concern is why did her friends keep her there if they knew she could not afford it? I mean, 450k is a lot of money and if you can't afford it, go to a cheaper facility. Why toy with your friend's life? I still know of some centers in Nigeria that you can get CS done for as low as 50K. Again we can't say much because we don't know what transpired betwe
