President, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Pastor Ayo Oristejafor, has said that most of the challenges confronting the country were self-inflicted with corruption and terrorism top of the bill. Oritsejafor made the statement in a sermon at an inter-denominational church service at the National Ecumenical Centre, Abuja, to mark the country’s 54th Independence Anniversary coming up on Wednesday. He noted that corruption and terrorism, which he described as ‘the greatest’ problems facing the country were created by greedy politicians and extreme religious ideologists. According to him, corruption is fed by greed, which in turn is rooted in poverty mentality. He defined poverty mentality as the thinking that what one had was not enough. Oristejafor differed with the school of thought that terrorism was caused by poverty. According to him, terrorism is caused by extreme religious ideology. In perhaps the most stinging criticism of the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), by a past leader of the body, the former Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Olubunmi Okogie, said the current president of the association, Ayo Oritsejafor is making a mockery of the association by his closeness to President Goodluck Jonathan and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party. Describing him as “fallen from grace to grass”, Mr. Okogie said Mr Oritsejafor’s has also lost grip of the leadership of CAN. Mr. Okogie, who spoke during an interview with the New Telegraph newspapers, said Mr Oritsejafor “unrighteous” quest to remain in power and his “romance” with politicians have finished him and derailed the once respected Christian body from the lofty dreams of its founding fathers. “My brother, I must tell you this; CAN leadership today is zero. President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday claimed his administration has succeeded in cutting the widespread poverty in the country by at least 50 per cent, adding that his party, the Peoples Democratic Party, fully subscribes to the principle of “stomach infrastructure”. Mr. Jonathan said this while speaking at a PDP rally in Benin, tagged ‘Unity Mega Rally’. About 20 people were killed and over 70 houses were burnt by gunmen suspected to be Fulani attackers on Friday night in Arikya and Anshangwa villages in Lafia Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. According to the Punch, many residents were displaced in the attack which occurred around 11 pm. The incident took place barely six days after Fulani invaders, numbering over 200, raided Gidan Gambo, 30 kilometres away from Lafia, the state capital, killing 10 people, razing over 50 houses and leaving hundreds displaced. One of the insurgents, Abdullahi Buldi, who was captured by the youths during the attack on Gidan Gambo, said that they were hired to attack Eggon communities in the state. The Punch’s source, who did want his name in print, said the attack at Arikya and Ashangwa was a reaction to the capture of Buldi by Eggon youths. Former airport worker, 20 year old Walter Earl Morrison (pictured) is accused of stealing a diamond ring worth about $150,000 and then swapping it for just $20 worth of weed. According to prosecutors (the case is currently in court), Walter had been working for UPS at the Sky Harbor Airport in Arizona when he allegedly swiped a package and hid it under his shirt while loading cargo onto a plane. Prosecutors said he thought the parcel contained cash but instead found a diamond ring. Of course he didn't know the value of the ring, so he took it a marijuana dealer and bought himself $20 worth of wee in exchange for the ring. The stolen item was traced back to him and he eventually confessed. He was immediately sacked by UPS and arrested for theft. Fortunately he was able to tell UPS and police who he sold the Diamond ring to. The ring was recovered and delivered to the intended customer while Walter is facing theft charges.

A 19-year-old boy identified as Abel who was recently promoted to SS3 in one of the secondary schools in Asaba, capital of Delta State, has allegedly put his own mother in the family way after he had a carnal knowledge with her few months ago. The stupid boy, popularly called Ekenem, was said to have consulted a native doctor, who prepared a love charm for him to use on his mother and one of the matrons in the college where he is a boarding student. Sources say the act committed by the boy still remains a misery to people in the area. 32-year-old Chinedu Nweke (pictured above) has been arrested for beheading 45-year-old Philomina Nwega in Ebonyi State. Nweke claimed he committed the heinous crime to avenge the serial rape of his wife by men in the murdered woman’s village. According to  Sunday Sun , the horrible incident happened on September 6th in Umuzeoka village in Ezza North LGA of  Ebonyi State. Recounting the bizarre tale, Nweke, a farmer, said men from the village had raped his wife severally, alleging that the repeated vicious act led to a miscarriage. “I am a farmer. Villagers raped my wife severally. And it made my wife to have mis­carriage anytime she was pregnant. I never complained about this problem to the police. It was on September 6, in the evening that I saw a woman coming from the farm. I waylaid her and I used my cutlass to kill her.
