The Abuja Minister, Bala Mohammed, has designated the General Hospital, Kuje, in Kuje Area Council, as Isolation Centre for possible Ebola-infected persons. The minister also inaugurated a 25-member committee to work out modalities for responding to the threat of Ebola virus and create awareness on the nature and symptoms of the virus. Mapp Biopharmaceutical, the makers of Zmapp drug used with positive results on American doctor, Kent Brantly and nurse, Nance Writebol, who got infected with Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in Liberia, have forwarded the drug to Liberian authorities for treatment of Liberians suffering from the virus. After Nigeria’s request for the drug was turned down, President of Liberia, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf made the same request, and it is believed that Liberia’s request was granted as it is one of the countries worst hit by the deadly disease. Even though the drug is still untested and has only been used on monkeys and chimpanzees, Liberia’s Minister of Information, Lewis Brown, said that in the prevailing circumstances, the use of an untested drug is a risk worth taking. “The alternative for not testing this is death, certain death. Four Indian doctors in Nigeria have said they are being forced to treat Ebola patients against their will. They also charged their employers with taking away their passports to ensure that the doctors couldn’t leave the country. The doctors – Yogesh Chandra, Dinesh Kumar, Hemant Jingar, and Kapil Chouhan – said they were threatened to not leave Primus Hospital in the Nigerian capital Abuja. With the virus spreading across the country, the doctors feared for their lives. According to the  Hindustan Times, Chouhan said.. “We haven’t been provided with any security kits. Our passports have been impounded. When we spoke to the Indian high commission, we were asked to come to the mission. Alfa Abdulganiyu, the Islamic Cleric of Iyana Ojere Ogidi, Laluba Area, Ilorin was remanded along with two others, Ahmed Bamidele, 20, of the same address and Lukeman Obalowu Issa, 32, of  Ile Olunle, Oloje Area, Ilorin, for allegedly conspiring to use the baby’s placenta for ritual purposes. The accused persons had appeared before the court on a three-count charge of conspiracy, trespass and criminal charms, contrary to Sections 97, 342 and 217 of the Penal Code Law. Police from ‘G’ Division, Oloje, Ilorin, on July 29, arrested the Islamic Cleric, alleging that they  conspired to exhume the placenta of the baby of one Ismaila Saadu of Ojere Street, Ogidi Area, Ilorin at about 6 a.m. where it was buried at the back of his house. According to the police, during a search for the missing placenta, the Islamic Cleric were arrested inside the cleric’s house drying and burning parts of the placenta with roasted chicken, pepper, red oil and alligator pepper for ritual purposes.

The Liberian Government was aware that Patrick Sawyer, its citizen who brought the Ebola virus into Nigeria, had possibly contracted the virus from his late sister, yet cleared him to travel to Nigeria for a conference organised by the Economic Community of West African States [ECOWAS], PREMIUM TIMES can authoritatively report today. Documents obtained by this newspaper showed that Mr. Sawyer’s employers, ArcelorMittal, an iron mining company, suspended him from work and isolated him after it became aware that he had contact with his sister who died of the virus on July 8. The company also issued an internal memo to staff of the company informing them that Mr. Sawyer had been referred to the Liberian Health ministry for testing and close observation. “A family member of an ArcelorMittal Liberia employee died on Tuesday, July 8th, in Monrovia due to a confirmed case of the Ebola virus,” the July 11 edition of Satellite, an internal newsletter of ArcelorMittal Liberia, said.
