Image
Read press statement by the National Coordinating Council of the OODUA People Congress (OPC) after a ‘violent’ protest occurred today in Lagos calling for the removal of INEC Chairman by Gani Adams fraction. The National Coordinator and other key members released this statement disassociating themselves from the act and wanting Nigerians to know Gani is on his own. We, the members of the National Coordinating Council of the Oodua People’s Congress, OPC, the highest ruling body of the organization, wish to disassociate ourselves from  the shameful, destructive, violent and reactionary activities of the Gani Adam-led team which occurred in Lagos today.  What was witnessed today in Lagos was the highest level of political violence sponsored and funded by certain elements in the Jonathan government. Tinubu Confesses He Helped Make Jonathan President In 2011

Image
A frontline leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, at the weekend confessed he betrayed his own candidate for President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2011 presidential contest. In that contest, Mr. Jonathan was in competition with General Muhammadu Buhari of the Congress for Political Change, but also with Nuhu Ribadu, the former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, who was the flagbearer of Tinubu’s Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). Curiously, while the candidates of the ACN did very well in the legislative and gubernatorial elections, Ribadu was trounced in all but one of the ACN States by Mr. Jonathan. Observers have always suspected that Tinubu, who was known to have flown to Abuja to meet with the president just before the election, was bought off to give victory to Jonathan in the area. Speaking at Onikan Stadium during an Ndigbo APC governorship rally on Saturday, Tinubu appeared to co

Obasanjo: Boko Haram’s grievances legitimate

Image
Olusegun Obasanjo, former president of Nigeria, believes that the Boko Haram sect has legitimate grievances.  Criticising the response of the current administration to the insurgency, Obasanjo highlighted low level of education in the northern part of the country as a contributory factor to the situation. He was speaking on Monday during a global education conference in Dubai, United Araba Emirates (UAE). In an interview with IBTimes UK on the sidelines of the Global Education Forum conference in Dubai, Obasanjo said that while 79% of Nigerians received education in the south west of the country and 77% in the south east, in the Boko Haram stronghold of the north east that figure was just 19%. "We don't need anyone to tell us that that is a problem. A problem of disparity, a problem of marginalisation. A problem because education is fundamental to your employability, to your living conditions. If you are not educated you are handicapped," he

Court upturns Ibinabo Fiberisinma's election as AGN President

Image
A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos today March 16th upturned the election of Ibinabo Fiberisnma Egbuka as President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria.   Delivering his judgement in a suit filed by actor Maradonna Mikevine, the presiding judge, Justice James Tsoho, ruled that the October 2014 election that brought Ibinabo back for second term was against a subsisting court order obtained by actor Emeka Ike in 2013, restraining the AGN from conducting any elections. Emeka had dragged Ibinabo to court in July 2013 following the constitution of a National Unity government in the AGN which was led by Segun Arinze who later handed over power to Ibinabo after a disputed election. Ibinabo has not reacted to this new development.
