UPDATE ON KANO BLAST: 8 died, 20 injured in Monday afternoon blast in Kano

KANO – A suicide bomber blew himself up alongside 7 others Monday afternoon, while 20 sustained life threatening injury at Kano School of Hygiene Technology located along Gida Murtala—-BUK road. The victims of the Monday afternoon blast were new intakes of the school undergoing screening exercise. Briefing Reporters on the scene,  Kano Commissioner of Police , Adelenre Shinaba revealed that 8 vehicles parked within the premises of the state owned tertiary institution were damaged. Mr. Shinaba stated that the incident occurred around 2.05pm when new students of the College were undergoing screening at the school. The Commissioner disclosed that a suspect was apprehended at the scene as he ruled out car bombing of this latest attack. BREAKING NEWS: Sudanese Mother Sentenced To Death For 'Converting To Christianity' Freed

A court in Sudan today ordered the release of the 27-year-old woman sentenced to death last month for converting from Islam to Christianity, the state news agency said. The case of Meriam Ibrahim, who is married to a Christian American, triggered an international outcry. She gave birth to a baby daughter while in prison. 'The appeal court ordered the release of Mariam Yahya and the cancellation of the (previous) court ruling,' Sudan's SUNA news agency said. The couple's 20-month-old son was also held in prison with Ms Ibrahim and her newborn daughter. Drug Abuse: 11 Children and A Hotel Manager Arrested By NDLEA

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Monday said it has arrested 11 children and the manager of a hotel in Kaduna over alleged drug abuse and trafficking . The Kaduna State Commander of the agency, Mohammed Jibrin, disclosed this in Kaduna while briefing newsmen on activities marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The theme for the celebration is, “A Message of Hope: Drug Use Disorders Are Preventable and Treatable’’. Jibrin said the children, seven girls and four boys, were arrested in a hotel room taking psychotropic substance. KANO – Scores were feared dead Monday afternoon at the premises of Kano School of Health Technology located along Gida Murtala–B UK Road. According to Vangurad, The high calibre improvised explosive device went off aroud 2pm at a time the school is in session. The blast appeared to come from a parking lot next to the provost’s office of the School of Hygiene, a post-secondary training school, said a teacher who requested anonymity. Kano police spokesman Magaji Magia confirmed the blast but declined to provide details until he reached the scene. More Details soon.

Egypt sentences 3 Al-Jazeera journalists to 7 years imprisonment

Three Al-Jazeera journalists, Peter Greste (correspondent, Australian), bureau chief Mohamed Fahmy (Canadian/Egyptian) have been sentenced to 7 years in prison each over allegations of false reporting and association with the now outlawed Muslim Brotherhood. While a 3rd journalist, Baher Mohamed (producer) was given 10 years for same charges and also for being in possession of ammunition. The three journalists were arrested in December 2013 after security forces raided their work suite office in Cairo on charges of 'spreading false news' and holding meetings with Muslim Brotherhood. The journalists had reported on how Egyptian security agencies killed hundreds of peaceful protesters in sit-ins in Cairo. This was when Egyptians took to the streets to protest the coup by the army that removed former Egyptian president, Mohammed Morsi, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood from power in July 2013 and demanding for his reinstatement. Edo Deputy Speaker, Others Escape Assassination Attempt

The Deputy Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Hon. Festus Ebea, the Minority Leader, Hon. Emma Okoduwa and Hon. Patrick Iluobe escaped death by whiskers on Sunday when their official vehicles were attacked by gunmen suspected to be assassins along the Benin-Asaba expressway. LEADERSHIP learnt that the incident occurred at Abudu, the headquarters of Orhionmwon local government area of Edo State as one of the suspected assassins was said have been shot dead by an orderly attached to Okoduwa. Another lawmaker was said to have been shot and seriously injured, while about 10 others escaped in an operation which sources said lasted for not less than l20 minutes on the busy route. Confirming the incident, Ebea who was visibly shaken by the incident, said the attackers were prepared going by their dressing and weapons.

Nigerian Soldiers Detain Speaker House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal

Lawlessness in Nigeria took a new turn when soldiers this morning in Kaduna detained the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, insisting his official car must be searched before he could be allowed into an international conference he was due to deliver a speech.  Angered by the conduct of the soldiers, the Speaker came out of the car and trekked into the venue. The incident occurred at Hotel 17, venue of an International conference on security and development challenges of pastoralism in West and central Africa organised by the office of the National Security Adviser. FIFA Suspends Cameroonian Striker, Song, For 3 Matches

FIFA on Monday suspended Cameroonian defender, Alex Song, for three matches for elbowing a Croatian striker, Mario Mandzukic, during the Cameroon and Croatia match at the 2014 World Cup. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports the Cameroon lost 0-4 to Crotia at the match played at the Arena Amazonia Manaus on June 18. A statement from FIFA Media Office stated that Song was also fined CHF 20,000 about N3.6 million for breaching Art. 48 (1)(d) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. “The FIFA Disciplinary Committee on Monday decided to suspend Song for three matches and impose a fine of CHF 20,000 for breaching Art. 48(1)(d) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. “The first match of this suspension is to be served in the upcoming World Cup fixture between Cameroon and Brazil today (Monday). “The remaining two matches ban will be served at the next official matches of the Cameroon national team in accordance with Art. 38(2)(a) of the FDC,’’ the statement added. Fraudster withdraws N1.9m through ATM

Vanguard Report : In apparent reflection of the rising incidence of electronic payment fraud, a fraudster withdrew N1.9 million from  the bank account of a customer through ATM in one week. This was disclosed by  Tam Tamunokonbia, Head, Consumer Protection Council, Lagos Office.  Speaking at the maiden summit of Bank Customers Association of Nigeria (BCAN) in Lagos last week, he said that ATM fraud is one of the commonest complaints received by the Council  from bank customers. He said in addition to this are: Illegal bank charges as against the minimum re-discount rate; Non-disclosure of terms and conditions by Banks and financial service providers; Mobile Payment Systems – online trading and Improper cheque verification. Citing example of these complaints, he said, “A lady’s N1.9 million withdrawn in one week without alert – case in Enugu High Court. A Company was charged in excess of N1, 984,662.40, another in excess of N592, 681 .61, and  another in excess of N552,597.01.”

The father of music superstar 2face Idibia was recently diagnosed with prostrate cancer. 2face himself revealed this early this month while speaking at a cancer charity event at the Eko Hotel, in Lagos. The good news is that he Mr Idibia was diagnosed early and has started the required treatment. "He is fine and there is really no problem. He was diagnosed early and he has started the required  treatment. He will be fine. It is just one of those things. The family will get through it. How A Heroic 13yr old Nigerian boy dies after trying to save a drowning girl

13 year old Ricky Osagie (pictured above, his dad right) from Warrenstown died on Saturday June 21st following a brave attempt to try to save a girl who had got into trouble swimming in a man-made pond at Waterville Hall residential complex in Blanchardstown, Dublin on Friday June 20th. According to Irish Mirror, a friend of Ricky's, a teenage girl got into the water and was almost drowning when Ricky and another female friend jumped into the pond to try to help her. The other teen girl who jumped in to help also now had difficulties in the pond, and it was up to Ricky to save both girls. Which he did. Paramedics were called and all three teens were taken to the hospital. No fewer than 40 people, including teenagers, were killed, weekend, when suspected Boko Haram insurgents attacked three villages of Chuha A, Chuha B, and Korongilim in Chibok Local Government Area of Borno State. The attackers, according to sources, destroyed houses, shops and vehicles after carting away foodstuff and livestock. In a report by Vanguard , A community youth leader in Chibok, Mallam Yakubu Joshua, who confirmed the incident on phone yesterday, said: “Some suspected Boko Haram terrorists invaded Chuha A, Chuha B and Korongilim villages of Chibok council of Borno State and killed over 40 persons. --> “The terrorists injured many other villagers, burnt many houses and made away with our foodstuff.
