Ricky Jackson (Reuters) - An Ohio man freed last year after spending 39 years in jail for a murder he did not commit will receive more than $1 million from the state for his wrongful imprisonment, court records show. An Ohio Court of Claims judge on Thursday ordered that just over $1 million be paid to Ricky Jackson, the longest-held U.S. prisoner to be cleared of a crime. This is going to mean so much," he said. Jackson was convicted along with Wiley Bridgeman and Bridgeman's brother, Kwame Ajamu, for the 1975 murder of Harold Franks, a money order salesman in the Cleveland area, after a 12-year-old boy testified he saw the attack, court papers show. Experts Warned Against Any Premature Declaration Of Victory Against Boko Haram

Image
(AFP) - Nigeria's President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday said the military hopes to recapture towns seized by Boko Haram within a month, in what would be a swift victory after six years of bloody conflict. But experts warned against any premature declaration of victory, with the militants still proving capable of carrying out deadly hit-and-run strikes and indications of coalition lapses. Jonathan, who is seeking re-election on March 28, said Boko Haram was "getting weaker and weaker every day". "I'm very hopeful that it will not take us more than a month to recover old territories that hitherto have been in their hands," he told the BBC. Nigeria has claimed major gains against the Islamists with the help of coalition partners Cameroon, Chad and Niger, achieving in just over one month what for years it had failed to on its own. Two out of three of the worst-hit northeast states -- Yobe and Adamawa -- have been declared "cle...

EBOLA: New case of Ebola hits Liberia

Image
Liberia has confirmed a new case of Ebola, undermining growing hopes in the country that it might soon be declared free of the disease. There had not been a new case for 20 days until a woman tested positive on Friday in the capital, Monrovia. The World Heath Organization requires 42 days to elapse from the last known case before a country can be declared free of the virus. More than 4,000 people in Liberia have died from the disease. Liberia's Acting Head of the Ebola Incident Management Team, Dr Francis Kateh, told the BBC that a woman who was taken into a treatment centre in Monrovia on Thursday had tested positive for the virus. Dr Kateh said he was concerned that it had not been possible to establish how the woman became infected, as health workers had run out of "contacts" to pursue. The authorities look to isolate anyone with whom a patient has been in contact and who may be carrying the disease. He said they now...

Yesterday, you read about the parents of 10th-grade students who climbed the wall of their school in Bihar to help them cheat on their exams (read  here ). Well, 600 of the students have been expelled. Bihar education authorities announced today in a statement. They said students caught cheating could be barred from taking the exam for up to three years, ordered to pay a fine or even sent to jail but no student on record has ever been sent to jail in the city for cheating. About 1.4m 10th graders are taking the tests at more than 1,200 high schools across the state. The students must pass the exams to continue their education and that's why their parents are so desperate. "It’s virtually impossible to conduct fair examinations without the cooperation of parents," said P.K. Shahi, Bihar’s education minister. "It is not possible to monitor the 6 million parents and others who accompany the students to the examination centers." Many stud...

Ignore Police IG's Unlawful Order, Telling Voters To Go Home After Casting Their Ballots, APC Tells Voters

Image
The All Progressives Congress, APC, has told Nigerian voters to ignore the unlawful order by the Inspector-General of Police urging them to go home after casting their ballots during the forthcoming elections. In a statement issued in Lagos on Friday by its National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, the party said the electorate should rather listen to the INEC Chairman, Attahiru Jega, who said the electoral law does not state anywhere that voters cannot or should not wait to watch and ensure that their votes are counted. It therefore urged the electorate to make sure they stay behind to protect their votes after casting their ballots, as was the case in 2011. APC said contrary to the suspicious directive by the IGP, INEC encourages voters to stay behind and watch their votes counted, saying the law expects such voters to stay behind but to conduct themselves in an orderly manner. ”According to Jega, who appeared on Channels TV on Friday morning, the electoral law s...
