Boko Haram members were arrested in Lagos - outgoing General Officer Commanding says

The outgoing General Officer Commanding (GOC) 81Division Nigerian Army, Major Gen. Tamunomiebi Dibi yesterday August 9th, said a good number of Boko Haram members were arrested in Lagos during his tenure. According to The Sun, he said this during his handing over ceremony to the the new GOC Major General Isidore Henry Edet. "Military job is a challenging task and Lagos State itself is a peculiar state. We have had our challenging times but we were able to overcome them. Under my watch, we were able to prevent the incursion of Boko Haram insurgents into Lagos.   A good number of them were arrested here in Lagos. Having served for 35years and retiring now, the legacy I expect my successor, the new General Officer Commanding 81 Division to uphold is to ensure a highly disciplined professional, efficient 81Division.” he said

Buhari meets with reps of Min of Transport, queries diversion of foreign loans for rail project

President Buhari and his Vice, Yemi Osinbajo met with officials from the Transport and National Population Commission at The Presidential Villa, Abuja today. He queried the diversion of $600m from a $1 billion loan collected from the Chinese Exim Bank meant to be used for the construction of a standard gauge rail line linking Lagos to Kano. President Buhari expressed his displeasure at the development when he met with representatives of the Ministry of Transport at the state house Abuja earlier today. “I hope that due process was followed before such diversions were carried out. Taking money from one project to another has to be done properly,” he said

Ife chiefs finally confirm Ooni's death, appeals to residents to obey palace orders as burial rites begin

The Ife traditional council in Osun State today finally confirmed the death of the Ooni of Ife, Okunade Sijuwade Olubuse II. Speaking through the the Awara of Iwara-Ife, Chief Layi Adereti, the council of chiefs said the official proclamation of the death of the Ooni who died July 28th, would be made on Wednesday August 12th. "This is an official statement from the palace of Awara of Iwara-Ife who is the head of Oro deity that on Wednesday 12th August 2015, there would be official proclamation of the demise of Ooni of Ife. The proclamation will be made public during the Oro festival, being the final rites on the demise of Ooni of Ife.   The residents of the ancient town are therefore urged to keep away from the streets between the hours of 9am and 4pm during which the Oro diety will be out. Man kills 3 over bitterleaf plant in Edo

Tragedy  struck, Sunday, at Ibillo, Akoko Edo Local Government Area of Edo State, when a man popularly known as Alhaji, murdered three persons including a three year old boy, after a quarrel over the ownership of a bitter leaf plant in the compound. The sad incident occurred at Ogo quarters Ibillo Sundayevening. The three killed includes a man identified as Mr Aliu Ademo, a girl called Favour and a little boy Isaac, who later died yesterday morning at the hospital. Vanguard learnt that trouble started when the Alhaji had a heated quarrel with the daughter of a Co-tenant called Favour over the bitter leaf plant in the compound. It was said that Alhaji went to harvest the vegetable without the consent of the owner which angered the daughter of the woman, Favour. Buhari appoints Sagay as head of advisory committee on war against corruption

President Buhari has appointed a Presidential Advisory Committee against Corruption headed by Professor Itse Sagay, a prominent professor of law and civil rights activist. The Committee’s brief, according to the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, is to advise the present administration on the prosecution of the war against corruption and the implementation of required reforms in Nigeria’s criminal justice system. Other members of the Committee, which is also expected to develop comprehensive interventions for achieving recommended reforms, are: (i) Prof. Femi Odekunle Professor of Criminology, Ahmadu Bello University – Member (ii) Dr. (Mrs) Benedicta Daudu Associate Professor of International Law, University of Jos – Member (iii) Prof. E. Photos: Five women accused of witchcraft beaten to death in India

The residents of Kinjia village in the Jharkhand state had blamed 5 women for failing crops, bringing illness to the village and even for the recent death of a child through their witchcraft. At around midnight on Friday August 7th, the women, aged between 45 and 50 were dragged from their homes and attacked with sticks and iron rods. "It looks like the village held a grudge against these women for a very long time, holding them responsible for various misfortunes." Police spokesperson, Arun Kumar Singh told AFP. Army reacts to photo of soldiers torturing a man in Nassarawa, vows to punish them

The Nigerian military has reacted to a photo published on the front page of Daily Trust newspaper today which showed a soldier torturing a man in Mararaba, Nassarawa state over the weekend. According to a statement by the army, the soldiers have been identified and will face disciplinary actions. The army press statement below... The attention of Nigerian Army has been drawn to a front page photograph of some soldiers maltreating a suspected robber at Mararraba, Nasarawa State, on the front page of today’s edition of Daily Trust newspaper. Sadly, it is also trending on the Social Media. There is no doubt the photograph has done incalculable damage to the image of the service. WAEC releases SSCE, withholds 118,101 candidates’ results

The West African Examinations Council has released the May/June 2015 Senior School Certificate Examination results, withholding 118,101 candidates’ results out of the 1.5 million students that sat the examination. WAEC Head of National Office, Mr. Charles Eguridu, announced this in Lagos at a press conference on Monday. Eguridu added that the states owing WAEC had reduced to 13, saying the candidates in public schools in the 13 states would not have their results until their state governments pay their candidates’ registration fees. The examination body had raised the alarm that 19 states owed the agency about N4bn, an amount that might cripple the operations of WAEC. Details later… PUNCH

Lagos Woman abandons her baby in day-care for 3 months (Photo)

A woman identified as Soloja Ayobola has abandoned her baby at a day care center in Ikorodu for over three months. According to  Vanguard  ,on the 18th of January, she brought her daughter 7 month old daughter Mofeoluwanifemi Amos, to God’s Care Nanny center .After filling the form , she promised to return with her passport to complete the registration process. But she never did. Elizabeth Oyeshile,  who runs the day care facility, said the woman described herself as a politician and a member of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and that because of the nature of her work, she travelled mostly during weekends for political campaigns and rallies. Oyeshile said the woman kept her baby, Mofeoluwanifemi Amos, in the facility on Thursday morning and said she would take her back on Monday. 24 year old, Victor Ebuka Okeke who hails from Njikoka in Anambra, was arrested in connection with the revalidation of expired food. NAFDAC raided his factory - a 1 room shop used to stock up and illegally revalidate 'expired' food products. Expired products discovered included Maggi Sauce, Amoy Dark Soy Sauce, Costa Corned Beef and Exeter Corned beef amongst others. According to NAFDAC, for the Costa Corned Beef, whether expired or not, their labeled to Exeter Corned Beef so as to attract better market interest. Mr Ebuka also confessed that he imports most of the expired products from Ghana. Discovered in his factory also were 2 drums filled with ordinary water which he used to immerse the products and remove the labels from the expired products without any trace and replace with new labels.
