Witnesses said one minute the building was standing, the next, they heard it giving way and watched it collapse, everyone present ran away from  and around the building. South Africa has repatriated 5,645 foreigners since the end of xenophobic attacks in late April, the government said on Sunday. A Minister in the Presidency, Jeff Radebe, who said this in a statement, added that the foreigners chose to leave South Africa voluntarily. Malawians made up the bulk of the foreigners, numbering 3,506, followed by Zimbabweans (1,440) Mozambicans (682), while Tanzanians had (17). Mr. Radebe said the repatriation process started soon after the latest spate of xenophobic violence ended in April. “The Department of Social Development continues to work closely with other relevant departments, as well as civil society organisations to provide support to displaced foreign nationals,” Mr. Radebe said. The official also said over 1,000 foreigners received trauma counseling. According to the statement, 10 women with children under 12 months of which three had just given birth were flown to their respective countries on their insistence.

As the May 29 inauguration of Nigeria’s President-elect and the Vice President-elect draws closer, pressure is mounting on the White House on who to represent the United States at the event. While the immediate past U.S. Assistant Secretary of State, Johnnie Carson, is asking President Barack Obama to send his deputy, Vice President Joe Biden, to lead the American delegation to the event, a pro-Africa U.S. lobby group in Washington DC and the Christian Association of Nigerian-Americans, CANAN are requesting President Obama to attend the event himself. In a press statement over the weekend Mr. Carson, who had advised Obama as the most senior government official on Africa (after the Secretary of State) until late 2013, however, requested that the U.S. President visit Nigeria in July while heading out to East Africa as already announced. The U.S. President is not ready yet to announce a delegation to the Nigeria’s presidential swearing-in ceremony on May 29. according

As the tenure of most state governors come to an end on May 29, they appear to have finally resolved to set aside their differences as members of the Nigeria Governors Forum, NGF, under the leadership of outgoing governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi. A unified NGF meeting is expected hold, Monday, at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel Abuja by 8 p.m. The NGF went into crisis in May 2013 after the election of officials split the body into two. At the election, which held at the Rivers State Governors lodge in Abuja, Mr. Amaechi defeated his Plateau State counterpart, Jonah Jang, with 19 votes to 16. However, indications at the time suggested that the Presidency was pushing for the emergence of anyone but the Rivers governor as NGF chair because of the political differences between Mr. Amaechi and President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Patience. After the election, Mr. Jang refused to accept defeat and formed a parallel NGF with his colleagues who voted for him. T

President Goodluck Jonathan has begged any Nigerian he may have offended while in office to forgive him. Mr. Jonathan made the plea on Sunday during a farewell service organized for him and his family on Sunday at the Aso Villa chapel. The President said there was no way he would not have stepped on toes in his roles first as Vice President, Acting President, and President of Nigeria. He added that this would not have been deliberate.
