Ikpeazu Gains Victory, As Court Sacks Anambra PDP Rep

Image
An Abuja Federal High Court Justice, Adeniyi Ademola, yesterday ordered the sack of Emeka Godwin Idu, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member of House of Representatives representing Onitsha North/South Federal Constituency of Anambra State. The judge also ordered the cancellation of the Certificate of Return issued him (Idu) by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Justice Ademola was ruling in a suit by Lynda Chuba-Ikpeazu, who challenged the decision of the party to substitute her name after being accepted by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), with that of Idu. Chuba-Ikpeazu had filed the suit on March 18, 2015, seeking among others to set aside the party’s decision. The PDP, INEC, the National Working Committee of the PDP and Idu were  defendants in the suit. But INEC did not file any defence. Justice Ademola held that the substitution of Chuba-Ikpeazu was wrong because it did not confirm with the requirement under the law.

Is Buhari Confused While Saraki Rampages And Jonathan Boys Go Insane? By Frisky Larr

Image
What is truly going through the mind of President Buhari at the present moment has become a task for fortunetellers and tea leaves readers. In these early days of his Presidency, he reminds me very much of former President Olusegun Obasanjo in the second term of his Presidency. The former President, who had a very clear idea what to do with Nigeria, made a clear point of refusing to interact with Nigerians through the mass media and allowed the opposition to use the media as a playground to throw mud at him uncontrolled. Much of that mud does stick to the former President today in his public perception. On the contrary, former President Goodluck Jonathan had no idea whatsoever, what to do with the Presidency and the country at large. To him, being a President was divine blessing enough, than the overwhelming task of moving Nigeria forward. The latter was a burden that he simply did not bargain for. Yet, he used the media. He communicated regularly with the people no matte

END TIME: US Supreme Court rules gay marriage is legal nationwide

Image
The US Supreme Court has ruled that same-sex marriage is a legal right across the United States. In a landmark 5-4 decision, Justice Anthony Kennedy writing for the majority ruled that marriage is a constitutional right for all. "No union is more profound than marriage,'' he wrote, backed by the court's four more liberal justices. It is unclear how soon marriage licences will be issued in states where gay unions were previously prohibited. Before the ruling on Thursday, gay couples could marry in 37 states in addition to Washington DC. Loud cheers erupted outside the court after the ruling was announced, said the BBC's Paul Blake at the Supreme Court. Hundreds of people had camped out for hours awaiting the news. One of the demonstrators, Jordan Monaghan, called his mother from his mobile phone amid the celebrations. "Hey mom, I'm at the Supreme Court. Your son can have a husband now," Mr Monaghan said.

NASS Leadership Crisis Not Delaying Ministerial List – Presidency

Image
The Presidency Yesterday refuted rumours making the rounds that the ongoing crisis in the National Assembly was preventing President Muhammadu Buhari from naming his ministers. The Senior Special Assistant to the president on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu dispelled the claim on Sunrise Daily, a morning programme on Channels TV. He said Buhari was taking his time to name his ministers because he is trying to avoid a situation whereby he would fire a member of his cabinet few months after he or she is appointed. “Do you want a situation where the president will appoint a minister and then fire the minister in few months time?” Shehu asked.

SEE The 6 Former Governors Under EFCC Watch

Image
Having exhausted the much-debated immunity provision in the Nigerian constitution, some ex-governors may be heading to the days of reckoning when they have to pay for their misdeeds if the anti-graft agency remains focused on achieving a conclusive prosecution. With the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) trailing some past governors and grilling them for hours, many of them will never want their paths to cross with that of the commission. Some of the former state executives having cases to answer before the commission are: Ikedi Ohakim If former governor of Imo State, Ikedi Ohakim, had been informed that operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) would knock at his door at about 8am in his Asokoro residence on Thursday, June 18, to arrest him, he may probably have changed his direction and hurried out of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). But that was not to be and his immunity as governor haven long been exhausted, EFCC officials storm
