Senate Disagrees With Buhari, Set To Adopt 2014 Confab Report

Image
Members of the Nigerian Senate, have decided to follow the footsteps of their counterparts in the House of Representatives going against the position of President Muhammadu Buhari on the 2014 National Conference report, as they have insisted on using the report for the ammendment of the nation’s constitution. This is as the Senate Committee on Constitution Review said it would adopt the report next week just as the House did last week. According to reports, some senators are of the view that the implementation of the recommendations contained in the 2015 Confab report, would go a long way to solve the various social, economic and political challenges currently facing Nigeria. It would be recalled that the House Committee on Constitution Review had announced on Thursday that it would use the report as a “working document” for the constitution review exercise. In a statement issued by the media aide to the Deputy Speaker, Suleiman Lasun, who chairs the committee, Wo

I am governor… your delay tactics won’t work, Ogah tells Ikpeazu

Image
Uche Ogah, rival of Okezie Ikpeazu, governor of Abia state, says he is the constitutionally recognised chief executive officer of the state. Accusing Ikpeazu of employing some tactics to delay him, Ogah said he might be forced to explore some other alternatives if the chief judge of the state refuses to swear him in. On Monday, Okon Abang, a justice of the federal high court, Abuja, ordered Ikpeazu to vacate office. The judge also asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to issue the certificate of return to Ogah, a directive that INEC has complied with. But the judge has not sworn him in, prompting the rumours that she had gone underground. However, in a statement issued on Saturday, Theresa Uzokwe, the judge debunked the rumours, but refused to comment on the court order. Addressing reporters in Lagos during the weekend, Ogah said Ikpeazu has been employing “delay tactics”, but that would not stop his emergence. “The entire wo

IYC condemns renewed attacks by Niger Delta Avengers

Image
The Ijaw Youths Council, IYC, on Sunday condemned the Niger Delta Avengers for its renewed sabotage of oil and gas facilities. The Niger Delta Avengers in an online statement claimed to have blown up two oil wells operated by Chevron near Abiteye flow station, Delta. According to a statement issued by Eric Omare, the spokesperson for the IYC, the attacks were a setback to ongoing peace talks. He called on the group to halt attacks on oil installations to pave way for meaningful dialogue. “It is unfortunate and worrisome that there is a resumption of fresh attacks on oil facilities in the Niger Delta region by the Niger Delta Avengers. “The visit of the Minister for State, Petroleum, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu’s to the creeks some weeks ago generated so much goodwill and commendation from the people of the region. “The IYC had expected the federal government to take advantage of that goodwill to engage stakeholders on how to find short and long term solut

We want to dialogue with Niger Delta Avengers, others – Nigerian Government

Image
The Nigerian government has expressed its commitment to dialogue with militants in the Niger Delta. The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, said on Saturday that the presence of soldiers in the region does not mean the government was opposed to dialogue. Speaking specifically about the Niger Delta Avengers, whose recent activities have caused a decline in Nigeria’s oil and power output, Mr. Lawal said the group needed to identify its representatives for a dialogue. “Government is not averse to discussing with them (militants) but we need to know who is in charge and who we can discuss with meaningfully; that’s the dilemma of the government at the moment”, he said. “There are so many groups making it difficult to know who to talk to and the level of control that group will bring to the process.” He appealed to leaders of Niger Delta communities to intervene by calling the militants to order, pointing out that the activities of t

Anarchy Looms in Abia State as 3rd Contender to the Governorship Sit Emerges....See Details

Image
The confusion, triggered by Dr Uchechukwu Sampson Ogah, who obtained a court order which sacked Governor Okezie Ikpeazu and affirmed him as governor-elect, expanded, at the weekend, as the third contender to the Abia governorship emerged, according to the Vanguard. A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirant in the state, Friday Nwosu, filed a suit against the judgment of the Federal High Court which declared Ogah as governor-elect. Nwosu averred that the court, having disqualified Ikpeazu as the governorship candidate of the PDP in Abia in the 2015 polls, should have declared him as governor-elect and not Ogah. The PDP governorship aspirant argued that the court ought not to have allowed Ogah to benefit from the primary election he condemned by refusing to sign the result while also petitioning the leadership of the party and asking it to conduct another primary election. Justice A.I. Allagoa of the Federal High Court, Owerri has fixed tomorrow

Speaking about his decision to let it all hang out the 34-year-old said: 'A lot of people look at me as a big person. Some people consider me to be obese. Some people consider me fat and sloppy. But I think this shoot will give people a different look at what I am. 'What people go to the gym and work for, I have. The only thing I don't have that they got is six-packs. But I really don't care about six-packs.' Wilfork also believes he can spread confidence. 'I just think it's a good idea for people that are bigger-boned. If people can look at me, a guy that's 325-plus, doing an issue like this, I'm pretty sure that they might have a little

EFCC Finds N2.5B In Former Aviation Minister Stella Oduah’s Housemaid’s Account:

Image
Agents of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have discovered the sum of N2.5 billion in a bank account opened in the name of a housemaid to former Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah, who is now a senator representing Anambra State in the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Two senior EFCC sources told our correspondent that the bank account and its huge deposits had been opened and operated without the knowledge of the former minister’s housemaid. “Senator Oduah apparently opened the account with her housemaid’s name, image, and details without the housemaid knowing about it,” said one EFCC agent familiar with the scandal.  Another EFCC source told SaharaReporters that Ms. Oduah had been going around to some top officials of the Muhammadu Buhari administration seeking their help to scuttle her impending trial. Last week, she asked for a meeting with EFCC chairman Ibrahim Magu, claiming she wanted to meet in her official capacity as a senator.  The two E

Ambode and the street traders of Lagos by Reuben Abati

Image
Article written by former presidential spokesperson, Reuben Abati. Read below... I am writing this piece after holding a series of conversations with Lagos street traders and hawkers who seem not be aware of or are just indifferent to, or may be they are intrigued by, the fact that the State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode has declared on television that the state government is prepared to enforce an existing law banning street hawking. The relevant law, the Lagos State Street Trading and Illegal Market Prohibition Law, 2003 prescribes a punishment of N90, 000 or a six-month jail term, for both the buyer and the seller of any goods or services on the streets. So I asked this vendor, who kept pushing copies of the day’s newspapers in my face, so close, you wouldn’t even be able to read the headline free of charge. “My friend, are you aware that what you are doing is illegal? You never hear say Governor Ambode don ban street trading?” “That one no concern vendor oh. Na these oth

EFCC traces N2.5b to ex-female minister’s housemaid’s account

Image
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has laid its hands on a bank account with over N2.5billion opened in the name of a former female minister’s housemaid. According to the Nation, investigators of the anti-graft agency believe the account was opened by the former influential minister in the name of the housemaid as part of the effort to cover her track. However, preliminary investigation has shownf that the former minister is the sole signatory to the account, The Nation gathered authoritatively yesterday. A highly placed EFCC source said  “Our findings indicated that the ex-female minister opened an account in the name of her housemaid and with her photograph. But the signature in the account is that of the ex-minister,” the source said. “At the time we made the discovery, over N2.5billion was in the account. But the volume of transactions in the account has been huge. “We are suspecting that the ex-minister did not put the housem
