House Deputy Speaker, Lasun Says National Assembly’s N150bn Budget Justified

Image
The newly elected deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, Yusuf Lasun, has defended the annual budget of N150 billion for the National Assembly since 2010. The amount was reduced to N120 billion in the 2015 budget, in the face of dwindling federal revenue. Mr. Lasun said the N150 billion which many Nigerians have criticised is not much compared to the entire budget of Nigeria. He said the National Assembly amount is less than three percent of the total budget of the federal government. According to him, the legislature is a separate arm of government with its own peculiarities. Meanwhile Mr. Lasun has said he does not have any plan to resign his position having been elected by the members of the House. He stated this during a chat with journalists in Abuja shortly after he inaugurated a 37-member Ad-hoc Committee on Welfare set by the House. Mr. Lasun, who represents Irepodun/Olorunda/Osogbo/Orolu federal constituency of Osun State o...

Girl who was told to 'stop Googling' cancer that eventually killed her left heartbreaking messages begging doctors to take her seriously

Image
19 year old Bronte Doyne begged doctors to take her seriously in a series of desperate messages written shortly before she died of a rare cancer that doctors told her she didn't have and should stop googling about. A frustrated Bronte said she was 'fed up of trusting' medics who refused to accept she was dying. She eventually died in March 2013, 16 months after she developed fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma, a rare form of liver cancer which only affects 200 people a year worldwide. Full report From UK Daily Mail The teenager had an operation in September 2011 to remove the cancer and was told she would make a full recovery, but online research in America told her that FBC often returns. But 'aloof and evasive' doctors at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) treated her with 'woeful lack of care and empathy' and refused to accept this and told her to 'stop Googling'. In a text weeks before she died she said...

The fake battle that fooled IS supporters - and their opponents

Image
A fake battle, invented in a hail of tweets by a London man, has tricked both so-called Islamic State's supporters, and their opponents, supporters of Shia militia fighters in Iraq. It was supposedly an intense battle involving Islamic State and Shia and Iraqi government fighters. Soon after the news broke, Twitter users that back anti-IS forces claimed a famous victory. "Big celebrations in Karbala after the freedom of Shichwa," said one. Another claimed "10,000 refugees flee Shichwa to Karbala" and rumours spread that neighbouring countries were being dragged into the fighting: "Disaster: the Saudi Army must quickly mobilize to the Iraqi border." But the battle of Shichwa never actually happened - in fact, Shichwa isn't even a real place. The fiction was the work of Ahmad al-Mahmoud, an Iraqi who lives in London and runs a Twitter account called @IraqSurveys. The account usually collates serious news about what's happening...

"I have been locked up as well, so what?" Buhari fires back at people accusing him of locking them up when he ruled

Image
President Buhari says those who have repeatedly accused him of locking them up while he was Head of State should remember that he was also locked up after he was removed as Head of State in 1985. Speaking to the Nigerian community yesterday in South Africa, Buhari said; "This is my first time of attending these types of meetings (AU) and they go on and on until about 1 in the morning. And then you are supposed to start in the morning again. Everybody is repeating what the other speaker has said instead of to keep their mouth shut. Anyways, it is a great experience. I have listened to the address paraphrased by the counsel-general, I’m pleased that wherever Nigerians are whether in South Africa or Saudi Arabia or Europe or Alaska for that matter, you’ll make an impact both positive and negative.   There is no way 160 million people or more cannot make impact wherever they are. We have so many cultures and nationalities. At a point I was very frightened. I don’t ...

A tribal court in southern Pakistan has convicted a 10-year-old boy of having an affair with a married woman in her late 30s and ordered him to pay a fine of $7,000, police said Tuesday. The incident occurred Monday in the remote village of Bakhrani in Sindh province, 510 kilometres (320 miles) north of Karachi. “The 10-year-old was caught having an extramarital affair with a lady from another tribe, which created bad blood between the two tribes,” a local police official requesting anonymity told newsmen. “The incident was later taken to a jirga (tribal court) which ordered the boy’s family to pay a fine of Rs700,000 ($7,000) to the aggrieved side. “The boy’s family paid Rs50,000 ($500) up front and undertook to pay off the remaining amount within three months,” he added. The chief police officer of the district, Umar Tufail, confirmed the incident but said the tribal court’s decision was illegal and was under investigation. “It has came to our knowledge that...
