The incident occurred at Upper Mission Extension in Benin. The suspect allegedly knocked the mother of three down with his car, which dragged her for over 500 meters, after the deceased requested the suspect to pay her money, estimated at over N10 million. Vanguard learned from the state Police command that the Austrian government had called to find out what happened, following information that the deceased flew into Nigeria with her Austrian passport. It was learned that the suspect, who is a spare parts dealer, was married to an Igbo woman here in Nigeria, but had been overseeing his lover’s investment here in Nigeria. It was gathered that the deceased, who has a dual citizenship, had been supplying the suspect with spare parts for s

Nigeria Army explains Why They Have Not Recaptured Towns Seized By Boko Haram

Image
The Nigerian Army said on Wednesday that the need to reduce collateral damage had delayed the recapture of some towns and villages seized by insurgents in Borno. Brig.-Gen. Olajide Laleye, the Director, Army Public Relations, gave the explanation while fielding questions at news conference in Abuja. Vanguard reports “We are not interested in collateral damage. “The Nigeria Army is very careful about collateral damage, to that extent our operations are carefully planned to make sure that collateral damage is reduced to the barest minimum. “If certain areas have not been recaptured it is because the Nigerian army is giving such areas very careful plans, the plans are ongoing. “At the right time you will see the outcome; we will not tell you, of course, before hand, of what we intend to do; but you will see the outcome,’’ Laleye said. According to him, Nigerians will be pleased at the end of such operations that collateral damage is reduced

Asari Dokubo Called Northern Politicians Ungrateful Parasites

Image
Leader of the Niger Delta Peoples Salvation Force, NDPSF, Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo-Asari has again stated that desperate politicians from the northern Nigeria are ungrateful parasites who have not appreciated the south and especially the Niger-Delta for depending on their oil proceeds over the years. Asari’s outburst was a reaction to the comments recently made by the Governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido that staunch supporters of President Goodluck Jonathan such as Asari and Chief Edwin Clarke were making incisive statements in their bid to secure a second term for Jonathan. Lamido had in his statements decried the candidacies of Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and General Muhammadu Buhari of All Progressives congress, APC. He was quoted as saying that the duo were capable of setting Nigeria ablaze with their ambition. But reacting to the statement, Asari who was also the former national President of Ijaw Youth Council, IYC and J

See what the mother of the transgender teen who killed herself wrote on Facebook

Image
17 year old Leelah (Josh) Alcorn committed  suicide  on Sunday December 28th by walking in front of a tractor trailer and left a suicide note before he died. But when her mum reacted to her death on Facebook, she wrote something that many folks in the gay/transgender world are very upset about. First the mother said she was 16 when Leelah wrote she was 17. Carla called her Joshua instead of the name she'd given herself, Leelah and she also refused to acknowledge that Leelah had committed suicide instead she wrote that she was hit by a trailer. Meaning that she still doesn't accept who Leelah was as a person even after she committed suicide. After the backlash, Carla deleted the post and removed herself from Facebook. Leelah Alcorn blamed his suicide on his Christian parents... Leelah's parents

A New Year message to Nigeria’s youth from Muhammadu Buhari

Image
Here's Gen. Buhari's New Year message to Nigerian youths... As we welcome the year 2015, I have shared a message to Nigerians in general, but I find it crucial to send another message directly to Nigeria’s youth, who are the major stakeholders of this enterprise. The year 2014 was a challenging one for most citizens of our dear country. We remember our compatriots who were brutishly killed or maimed by evil terrorists in 2014. I remember with a still broken heart that 219 of our children from Chibok are yet missing, let down by a country that should protect them. I remember that, even as I speak, some of our towns and villages are yet under the occupation of Boko Haram. Yes, it is enough for you to despair. It is enough for you to wonder if your country cares about you and can protect you. But do not despair. 2015 has arrived at a time of great discomfort; but the beauty of the New Year is that we can look forward with renewed hope and the knowledg

After darkness, a glorious dawn beckons for Nigeria by Bola Tinubu

Image
Text of the New Year message to Nigerians by the National Leader of the APC, Bola Tinubu... As we enter a New Year today, it is all too easy to give in to despair and despondency at the current state of Nigeria. The gap between our tremendous potentials as a country and our actual attainments is depressing and disheartening. For a country as endowed with human, material and natural resources as Nigeria, the level of poverty in which the vast majority of our people live is appalling and unacceptable.  The voodoo statistics of illusory growth and progress peddled by those currently in charge of Nigeria’s affairs do not reflect the dire material circumstances of millions of Nigerians. The ever widening inequality between the wealthy minority and the impoverished majority is fueled largely by a scale of corruption and outright theft of public funds that have reached unprecedented heights in today’s Nigeria.  All of these are responsible for the large scale manifestation

Afterwards, there were 15 people lying dead in the streets,” ,” a survivor, Jonah Umaru, told newsmen on phone.

Man uses daughter as collateral for loan

Image
A desperate  Bakassi  refugee in  Cross River State  has been forced to use his 12-year-old daughter as collateral for a loan which he is now unable to repay. Edet Okon  in a bid to save his older daughter from death by cancer used her sister as a bargaining chip to acquire a sum of N600, 000. However, the sick daughter,  Blessing  died, in 2013 and the younger one, Mary is forced to remain in slavery due to her father’s inability to pay back the money he borrowed. Okon told Punch of his ordeal: “I was desperate to save Blessing from dying. Her situation had become critical at that time. That was the only thing I could do to salvage the situation. I am heartbroken. I don’t know what came over me. It was sheer desperation I gave out my daughter so that the man would accept to give us the money,”  he said. Mary on the other hand opened up on her life in slavery: “The man my father is owing has three female children and some other relatives are also putting

Cancer-causing metal detected in water supplied to Lagos residents

Image
Drinking water pipes at Ijora-Badia In the second part of his report,  KUNLE FALAYI  takes on the Lagos State Water Corporation armed with the report of a chemical analysis done on a sample of the contaminated water which some Lagos residents drink oblivious of the dangers they face At Ijora-Badia, one of Lagos’ most notorious slums, living around dirt is obviously not strange to the residents. But the water they buy from vendors who get their supply from the Lagos State Water Corporation may be doing them more harm than good. A sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation, which is Target 10 under Goal Seven of the Millennium Development Goals, continues to be an illusion to people like the residents of this area. According to the United Nations, at least 783 million people the world over lack access to clean water. Our correspondent noticed that many residents of the Ijora-Badia community dispose of their human wastes in open sewers while most of
