Justice Lawal Akapo of the Lagos State High Court, Ikeja on Monday June 22, 2015, convicted and sentenced one Emmanuel Osita (a.k.a Chuks) to three years imprisonment on a two count charge of obtaining money by false pretence. The convict was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, sequel to a petition from a legal practitioner on behalf of one Mrs. Veronica Okonkwo, an eighty-one (81) year-old woman who was the victim. The convicts while operating as a commercial tri-cyclist conspired with other persons who are still at large and falsely represented to the victim that they had the capacity to produce local and foreign currencies from pieces of papers by dipping them into mercury. Osita and his accomplices hoodwinked the 81-year-old woman to let go the sum of N120, 000.00 (One Hundred and Twenty Thousand Naira) as registration fee with a mercury company prior to the procurement of the chemical. A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos will  tomorrow  rule on contempt trial slammed against the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice by Senator Buruji Kashamu. Kashamu initiated the proceeding following the invasion of his house in Lekki Lagos by operatives of NDLEA on the 23 rd  of May, 2015. He claimed that the invasion is a violation of an existing order of the court. At the proceeding today, the court presided over by Justice Ibrahim Buba dismissed the application for stay of proceeding by the NDLEA and the AGF. He also rejected the request for an adjournment sought by the respondents. It would be recalled that the NDLEA invaded the Lagos home of Senator Kashamu with over 50 operatives claiming that it has a request from the US government to extradite him to face drug related trial. Buhari Has No Plans To Dismiss Oil Subsidy, Femi Adesina Says

President Buhari has not made any decision to eliminate the oil subsidy for Nigerians, according to a phone conversation SaharaReporters had with Femi Adesina. Mr. Adesina, the Special Adviser to the President for Media and Publicity, told SaharaReporters that “those reports have not come out of the President’s Office, so I cannot confirm them.” It was previously reported that President Buhari planned on carrying out recommendations from reports out of the Transition Committee, including the removal of oil subsidies to fund education and food for students across the country. Bomb blast rips through bus station in Maiduguri

A blast rocked a bus station in the northeastern Nigerian city of Maiduguri on Monday, a civilian vigilante assisting the military against Boko Haram and a local resident told AFP. Heavy casualties were feared after the explosion near a fish market in the Baga Road area of the city at about 3:50 pm (1450 GMT), said vigilante Danlami Ajaokuta. More to follow…

Buhari orders removal of military checkpoints nationwide

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday ordered the removal of all military checkpoints set up in the wake of Boko Haram activities across the country. The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Aliyu Ismaila, disclosed this to State House correspondents after a meeting Buhari had with service chiefs at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Ismaila said the meeting had further encouraged the security chiefs to do more in the war against insurgency because of the leadership being provided by the President who is a retired military officer. The Senior Special Assistant (Media and Publicity) to President Muhammadu Buhari, Garba Shehu, has explained why the ministerial list of President Buhari is not out yet. Shehu, who was responding to a question on national television last night on the seeming delay in the announcement of the President’s cabinet, said the ministerial appointees would be subject to the approval of the National Assembly which is currently not in session. He assured that as soon as the National Assembly reconvenes, the list would be forwarded to both chambers for approval. Garba declined to speak further on the issue, adding that now that the President has moved into Aso Rock, Nigerians would see more action. N25.7bn: Court frees former Bank PHB MD, Francis Atuche, others

A Lagos High Court in Ikeja Monday dismissed the N25.7billion criminal charge preferred against the former Managing Director of Bank PHB, Mr. Francis Atuche, and others. Atuche was set free alongside his wife, Elizabeth and a former Chief Financial Officer of Bank PHB, Mr. Ugo Anyanwu. The three persons were prosecuted by the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly stealing N25.7 billion from the bank. In a ruling delivered by the presiding judge, Justice Lateef Lawal-Akapo, the court held that it is duty bound to comply with the decisions of Court of Appeal in the appeal of Okey Nwosu and Erastus Akingbola. The judge noted that though the prosecution, in its submission, was right to say that count one to ten of the charge was anchored on stealing which falls within the purview of State High Court. However, the judge maintained that the prosecution did not make any submission to as whether count 11 to 27 have any nexus with sha
