Immigration tragedy: FG offers victims’ families automatic employment

P resident Goodluck Jonathan has directed that three employment slots be reserved for the families of those who died during the stampede that occurred during the recruitment exercise conducted by the Nigerian Immigration Service on Saturday nationwide . Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, disclosed this to State House correspondents on Wednesday at the end of the Federal Executive Council meeting which was devoted to the incident.  He said one of the three beneficiaries must be a lady. Jonathan also directed that all those who sustained injuries and are currently hospitalised be given automatic employment in the service.  While ordering that the ill-fated exercise be cancelled, the President set up a committee led by the Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission, to conduct a fresh exercise. The committee has the Comptroller-General of NIS as well as representatives of the Inspector-General of Police and the heads of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Coprs,

CONFAB: National Conference Adjourns To Formulate Rules

Former Chief Justice of Nigeria and chairman of the conference, retired Justice Idris Kutigi BARELY 24 hours after inauguration, Punch reported that the National Conference on Tuesday  adjourned sitting by one week in order for its secretariat to formulate the ground rules that would guide debates. The chairman of the conference, retired Justice Idris Kutigi, adjourned sitting after the Secretary, Mrs. Valerie Azinge, told delegates that the rules would be ready by Thursday. In the interim, however, delegates had been handed copies of reports of past conferences to study.  

NYSC Offers Ex-Member N100,000 For Loss Of Limb

A former corps member, Emmanuel Unogu, has been offered  N100,000 by the National Youth Service Corps for the loss of his right leg during the service year. Unogu, who served with the Urueffong/Oruka Local Government, Akwa Ibom State in 2008, was involved in an auto accident, which later led to the loss of his leg. PUNCH Metro  had reported on April 18, 2013 that Unogu was involved in the accident while on his way to Oron on October 26, 2008.  Although the state’s NYSC authorities were said to have been aware of the accident, Unogu allegedly did not receive proper medical attention.

SUBSIDY REMOVAL LOOMS AGAIN: FG May Remove Petrol, Kerosene Subsidies

The Federal Government may have concluded plans to stop subsidising the consumption of petroleum products in the country, especially petrol and kerosene following increasingly dwindling revenue. According to Punchng , the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, gave the clearest hint yet of the planned removal of subsidies on both products by the Federal Government on Tuesday at the ongoing Nigerian Oil and Gas Conference in Abuja.   She said that the subsidies being paid to the marketers by the Federal Government on imported Premium Motor Spirit and kerosene were no longer sustainable, prompting analysts to say the days of the petrol and kerosene subsidy regime might soon be over.  

Tourist Falls Asleep On The Edge Of A Rock,Falls To His Death Minutes After Taking This Photo

Just minutes after tourist Zoran Tomic, 23, was snapped by his twin brother in front of an impressive view of the ancient city of Bolzano,  he fell to his death on the rocks 30 metres below having nodded off and rolled over the edge. According to reports, after the picture was taken he was taken by the sight and decided to stay back and enjoy the tranquility while his friends moved on .However, his body was later found by a walker at the foot of the wall who initially thought he was asleep Officials said he had died instantly upon hitting the rocks below and suspect that he'd fallen asleep on top of the wall and then tumbled off. Tomic had moved to Italy and toured Bolzano and the surrounding area with his brother, as they'd heard there were good football teams there and were keen on joining one.

Fire Guts Christ Embassy Headquarters In Oregun Lagos

Property worth millions of naira were, Tuesday, destroyed when fire consumed the main auditorium of Christ Embassy Church, located on Billings Way, Ikeja, Lagos. When Vanguard visited the scene, it was gathered that the fire started at 6.30pm from an apartment which housed about 14 power generating sets. It was further learnt that the fire started as a result of power surge from one of the generating sets.   Sources said that immediately the church members noticed the fire, they tried putting it off with their in-house extinguishers. However, the fire escalated and spread to the church main auditorium. The church management declined speaking on the incident.

Confab: Group Faults Ike Nwachukwu’s Nomination To Lead Ndigbo

ONITSHA  —  Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ndigbo Unity Forum, NUF, has faulted the nomination of Senator Ike Nwachukwu as leader of  Ndigbo  delegates at  the on-going national conference. In a press statement to newsmen in Onitsha, Anambra State, shortly after its one-day national convention, yesterday, the group said it was rejecting Nwachukwu’s nomination for failing  Ndigbo  in the past.   In the statement jointly signed by Augustine Chukwudum, President and Chinedu Onyebuchi, Secretary-General, NUF said it is only worthy Igbo sons and daughters who had proven themselves through positive contributions to  Ndigbo  that should be saddled with the responsibility of representing  Ndigbo .

Pastor Caught for Defrauding Church Member of N17m In Lagos

Greed and things of the flesh are really controlling some men who call themselves pastors: The Pastor of Christ Citizen Glorious Assembly, Okota, Lagos, Pastor Ikechukwu Ezeiru, has been charged in an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrate’s Court with fraud. He was arraigned on Tuesday for allegedly defrauding a member of his church, Ifeanyi Ohazurume, of N7m. The police said Pastor Ezeiru collected the money with the claim that he wanted to help Ifeanyi purchase fake auction goods from the Nigerian Customs Service. He didn’t return the money or the goods. He started "playing" the guy around. It was learnt that the pastor claimed to have given the money to his wife. He wife too claimed she passed the money to someone else....

Pastor Sent to Prison, Suffered Stroke After he Stabbed his Wife

An Ogun State Chief Magistrate’s Court sitting in Owode Egba, Obafemi Owode Local Government Area, has remanded Pastor Samuel Daniel of the Apostolic Church in prison for using a machete on his wife. He was arraigned on a two-count charge of assault and providing false information, which is punishable under Sections 338 and 192 criminal code Vol 1 law of Ogun State, 2006. The pastor, who operates with an Apostolic Church in Ode Remo area of the state, went to his wife’s place of work at Itori area of Owode-Egba on December 10, 2013 and used the machete on her for allegedly abandoning church programmes. After his eyes cleared, he took his wife to the hospital and reported the case at Owode-Egba Police Station, but lied to the police that some unknown men attacked his wife...
