Thank you for honoring me with your presence here today. Thank you for heeding my invitation to this special meeting with key stakeholders in the Nigerian media. Our country is on the verge of something new. The tide has turned and the world can sense the wave of change that is about to flood this nation. A MUST READ FOR RUNS GIRLS: Letter to single ladies from a wife - by Joy Oforka

Image
Interesting letter to single women from a concerned wife. Read below and tell us what you think Dear Single Ladies,   Na wa. Yes, na wa. Not because I am ignorant of appropriate ways to begin a letter but because no other beginning could be more expressively appropriate for you. "Na wa"  because it is a common expression of bewilderment like when we hear Sister Lucy is called Candy outside church. "Na wa" because it is fitting for disgust like when we see Sisi Kemi is becoming a grandmother - scratch that, mother - as she is pregnant for Baba Ade. "Na wa" because we are fatigued by speechlessness seeing that when we say the Lord's prayer for our husbands, we should replace "temptations" with "evil single ladies". Hence, on these counts and more, I greet you "na wa".   I have tried to make sense of your thing with our husbands. Though it is common knowledge that people cheat (it obviously transcends gen...

Switzerland returns $380 million in Abacha's loot to Nigeria

Image
Swiss officials say they are returning to Nigeria some $380 million linked to the country's former dictator, Gen. Sani Abacha. Geneva prosecutors said Tuesday they ordered the money seized in Luxembourg starting in 2006. It was transferred to Switzerland and officially confiscated last year following an agreement between Nigeria and the Abacha family under which the Nigerian government dropped its case against the late dictator's son, Abba Abacha. The money, confiscated on the basis that the Abacha family was a criminal organization, will now be returned to Nigeria under World Bank supervision. Geneva prosecutors closed their own case, opened in 1999, in which Abba Abacha was the last person still under investigation. Switzerland has previously returned to Nigeria more than $700 million that Sani Abacha stashed in Swiss accounts.

Obama traces origin of ISIS to Bush-era Iraq invasion

Image
President Barack Obama traced the origins of Islamic State militants back to the presidency of George W. Bush and the invasion of Iraq back in 2003, arguing that its growth was an “unintended consequence” of the war. In an interview with   Vice News , President Obama said the rise of Islamic State (IS, also known as ISIS/ISIL) can be directly linked to America’s excursion into Iraq under Bush. “Two things: One is, ISIL is a direct outgrowth of Al-Qaeda in Iraq that grew out of our invasion,”  Obama said in an interview with VICE News.  “Which is an example of unintended consequences. Which is why we should generally aim before we shoot.” Obama stated that he is  “confident”  a coalition consisting of 60 nations  “will slowly push back ISIL out of Iraq,”  but added that the challenge of stopping extremism won’t stop unless there is a political solution to the internal strife affecting so many countries in the Middle East. “What I’...

BREAKING NEWS: Nigerian government cuts electricity tariff by 50%

Image
The Nigerian government has announced a reduction in electricity tariffs by half. The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission on Wednesday announced the immediate review of electricity tariffs by about 50 per cent. The Chairman of the Commission, Sam Amadi, who announced the review in Abuja, said the reduction, which takes effect from the end of March, followed the regulatory agency’s decision to remove collection losses from customer tariff under the multi-year tariff order. Mr. Amadi said following the approval of the multi-year tariff order, MYTO 2.1 in January 1, 2015, the Commission had received several complaints and petitions against the decision, which resulted in astronomical increases in tariff across the different consumer categories. He noted particularly the petition by industrial and commercial consumers under the auspices of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, which demanded a drastic reduction of their tariffs. The two categories of consu...

Brown Ideye and Anthony Ujah have been recalled to the Nigerian Super Eagles, for two international friendly matches

Image
Brown Ideye and Anthony Ujah have been recalled to the Nigerian men's national team, the Super Eagles, for two international friendly matches after recent snubs by the selectors. The two strikers were part of the Nigerian squad to the 2013 Fifa Confederations Cup in Brazil but were excluded from the team to the 2014 World Cup in which the Super Eagles were eliminated in the second round by France. Ideye last featured in an international for Nigeria in the 2-2 draw against Italy in November 2013 when he came on as substitute for Victor Moses. But his recent scoring form which has seen him net seven goals in all competitions for West Brom has earned him a recall. Ujah, on the other hand, has scored nine goals for FC Cologne in the Bundesliga and helped with two assists, and his present form has swayed the national selectors to call him after his last appearance against Tahiti at the Fifa Confederations Cup almost two years ago. Watford striker Odion...

BREAKING: Prof Jega Summoned By Jonathan to Villa Over Use of Card Readers, May Force Him To Resign

Image
President Goodluck Jonathan has summoned the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega to the presidential villa over the use of card readers for the March 28 and April 11 General election. The decision to summon Jega followed the discovery by the presidency that the plans to jam the card reading machines meant for the election would not work. Recall that the All Progressives Congress (APC), had Monday revealed that the PDP had hired an Israeli, Gyora Berger to do the dirty job of jamming the card readers. A statement Monday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed said ”We can authoritatively inform Nigerians that the morbid fear of card readers by the Jonathan Administration and the PDP has now been translated into concrete action: They have hired an Israeli, Gyora Berger, to do the dirty job of jamming the card readers,” the party said in a statement issued in Lagos  on...

United Airlines flight grounded after passenger tries to enter cockpit

Image
A flight headed from Washington, D.C., to Denver had to return to Dulles International Airport Monday after a passenger failed to comply with crew instructions. Spokesman Luke Punzenberger said in a statement that Flight 1074 returned after takeoff Monday evening. He says local law enforcement met the aircraft at the gate and detained the passenger. The news first broke on Reddit, where a user posted a photo of a man being subdued on the plane. According to the account of that user, whose father was apparently aboard the plane, the man claimed he had "bombs" and ran towards the cockpit, but several passengers tackled him before he got there. One of the plane's pilots told a similar story to air traffic controllers, ABC reports. "He ran forward towards the cockpit and he is being restrained by passengers," the pilot is quoted as saying. A video apparently showing the passenger being subdued has been posted to YouTube. In t...

Jonathan to reshuffle cabinet, may sack Diezani, others

Image
A report on Monday indicated that President Goodluck Jonathan may reshuffle his cabinet any time soon, a development that may consume some powerful Ministers. According to Blueprint, Jonathan is likely to use the occasion of the swearing-in of new ministers recently cleared by the Senate, on his return to Abuja, to drop the bombshell. Among cabinet members reportedly marked for replacement is the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs Diezani Allison-Madueke. Diezani was described as “more of a liability than an asset”. It was gathered that the strategy is part of Jonathan’s “three-prong approach” to win more support as the campaign pulls into the home stretch. The source said: “Two of the planks are already in full throttle; getting the anti-terror campaign to an irreversible point of victory and to throwing himself completely into the ground game. “The latter has seen the president return to the South-west battle ground repeatedly. The VP is also ...
