At least 13 Tiv farmers were slaughtered by suspected Fulani herdsmen who stormed two Benue villages on March 6, 2014, Thursday. The attackers were carrying sophisticated weapons with them and their numbers were huge, up to 400, in attacked Tombo ward in Logo local government and Moon district, in Kwande local government. In Tombo ward, the armed bandit attacked and set ablaze Adzege, Tse Dzungwe, the home of Uja Emmanuel, the Nation reporter in Benue and setting it ablaze. They also attacked Anyibe, Tse Gbeleve and were heading to Ayilamo, the administration headquarters of Tombo ward, which is just 15 minutes drive to Anyiin, the country home of Governor Gabriel Suswam. Most of the inhabitants of the settlement in Tombo ward fled days back before the attackers arrived and reduced their houses to rubble. Chairman Logo local government council, Hon. kester Ikyenge said, security men have been drafted to the crisis zone and appealed for calm.

It is not a fact in dispute that some of the Judges currently into the business of dispute adjudication in Nigeria are extremely very corrupt. Whereas some of them not only handle their job as a no-man’s-business, others, aside elevating themselves to a ‘god-status’, treating court users with glaring  indifference, a situation that often see litigants and lawyers waiting endlessly in the open court for a Judge who may be having a nice time somewhere or sleeping inside his chambers.

ABUJA— Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, yesterday, said the Federal Government was contemplating a downward review of tariff on imported rice. Okonjo-Iweala, who disclosed this while answering questions at the ‘Budget 2014 Jam’, in Abuja said that the drop in the tariff would reduce smuggling of the commodity into the country.

DESPITE the Federal Government’s plea to chairmen of Governing Councils of Federal polytechnics to prevail on striking polytechnic staff to accept government’s offer to pay the outstanding CONTISS 15 arrears in two installments for the immediate resolution of the ongoing strike, students in the over 20 federal polytechnics and several other state polytechnics would have to remain at home a little longer as the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, has remained resolute, saying it would not call off the strike till its demands are met. Recall that during a recent meeting with the chairmen of  Governing Councils of Federal Polytechnics in Abuja, the Supervising Minister of Education, Mr. Nyesom Wike, said government is committed to paying CONTISS 15 in two installments in March and November 2014 which stands at over N40 billion.

WASHINGTON (AFP) – The United States said Wednesday it had ordered a freeze on $458 million in assets stolen by former Nigerian dictator Sani Abacha and his accomplices and hidden in European accounts. The Justice Department said the corruption proceeds — stashed away in bank accounts in Britain, France and Jersey — were frozen at Washington’s request with the help of local authorities. Abacha died in office in 1998, but his surviving relatives still include some of the richest and most influential figures in Africa’s most populous nation.
