Femi Fani-Kayode releases statement following his release from detention + His first tweet after his release

Chief Femi Fani-Kayode who has been in detention since May 9, 2016, finally regained freedom today, Friday, July 15, 2016, after fulfilling his bail conditions. In a statement released by the former Minister of Aviation, he said his trial and detention were all politically motivated but that he would not be broken. While expressing thanks to all those who stood by him in his trying times, he reiterated his innocence while stating his readiness to stand trial and vigorously defend himself and concluded by vowing that the struggle would continue. "I give thanks to God that I am free after 67 days in detention. I thank my wife, lawyers, children and friends for all their support. This was the worst experience of my life but God was with me all the way. I suffered immeasurably but I count it all as joy. I am innocent of all charges and I look forward to defending myself vigorously in court. These charges are politically motivated and I have been severely punished

BREAKING NEWS: Military coup underway in #Turkey

There has been a military coup in Turkey. The country’s Prime Minister, Binali Yildirim, announced that some senior soldiers engaged in a “coup attempt.” Aljazeera quotes Mr. Yildirim as saying on Friday evening that the “perpetrators” will be contained. He said some generals in the country’s military were involved in the attempted takeover. It is not yet clear how much of the country the coup plotters control. Turkey’s main Ataturk international airport has been shut down and all flights have been cancelled, Aljazeera reports. Major bridges and businesses in Istanbul, the capital, have also been shut. Turkey, a member of NATO, has experienced at least three military coups since 1960. The last attempt, which occurred in 1997, forced the resignation of then-prime minister Nemettin Erbakan. The ruling AK Party has been in power since 2002.

Reps: US ambassador did not follow due process in ‘sexual misconduct’ allegation

The federal house of representatives says James Entwistle, United States ambassador to Nigeria, did not follow proper channels when he directly petitioned Yakubu Dogara, speaker of the house, to accuse three lawmakers of sexual misconduct. On June 16, it was revealed that Entwistle had written the lower chamber to accuse three members — Samuel Ikon (PDP Akwa Ibom), Mohammed Gololo (APC Bauchi) and Mark Gbillah (APC, Benue) — of seeking the services of sex workers while they were attending a programme in the US. But all three lawmakers have denied any guilt, and have demanded evidence of the vice from their accuser. The Federal High Court on Friday said Justice Okon Abang ordered Abia State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu’s sack because the judge found that he allegedly submitted false tax information to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The court said the case had nothing to do with forgery of tax documents. The court’s Chief Registrar, Emmanuel Gakko, said in a statement that there were two different cases against Ikpeazu. He said one of the cases was filed by Sir Friday Nwosu with Dr. Ikpeazu and Dr. Sampson Uche Ogah as defendants. The case was before Justice Ambrose Allagoa. In the second suit before Justice Abang, Dr. Ogah was the plaintiff, while Dr. Ikpeazu and Sir Nwosu were the defendants. The court said the case before Justice Allagoa bothered on alleged forgery or falsification of tax certificate and receipts for 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 by Dr. Ikpeazu. Tensions erupt in Abala community in Obingwa Local Government of Abia State as Fulani herdsmen with over 200 cows were reported to have invaded the community attacked farmers mostly women and destroyed their crops. Report has it that some natives of the community have fled their homes and are now taking refuge in neighbouring communities even as a community leader was quoted to have warned the community vigilance group not to take laws into their hands. Femi Fani-Kayode finally released, after over 2 months in detention

Femi Fani-Kayode, who arrived EFCC office on May 9th for questioning and was subsequently detained, has finally been released. He was released around 6pm this evening July 15th from Ikoyi prisons after meeting his bail conditions. EFCC is accusing the former spokesman of the Goodluck Jonathan presidential campaign of receiving over N800million from CBN. The former minister insisted that he got the money to do specific assignments given to him by the former President for his presidential campaign.

Photos: 'Disgruntled' Kenyan police officer goes berserk, kills 7 colleagues

A Kenyan police officer went on a shooting spree, killing seven of his colleagues, including a member of hostage response team on Thursday, July 14 at Kapenguria Police Station. One of the officers includes Officer Dennis Momany from Coy Ruiru, who got married few weeks ago. The siege began when the attacker, identified as Abdilhakim Maslah, opened fire on his fellow officers, leading to a hostage situation. Police at first suspected the attacker had ties to the al-Shabab jihadist group. According to the police, Maslah, a station guard, got off work Wednesday night but returned to the Kapenguria station shortly after 5am on Thursday and started shooting. A separate police statement to the media said the officer, "for yet unknown reasons, went berserk and grabbed a firearm" and started shooting. The photo was later shared alongside an article detailing the perceived marginalization of residents of the state who live in shanties.
