There were wide spread reports online today that the Oba of Benin, Oba Erediuwa had passed on at age 92. The Benin Council of Chiefs through its secretary Frank Irabor has however debunked the reports. According to Mr Irabor, the rumors have been in circulation now for over a year "They have been peddling that rumour for more than a year now, because the Oba has not been coming out. If there is anything like that, there is usually a statement from the palace or from the Benin Traditional Council. Before the Council of State meeting, the position of the president, and that of the ruling party, PDP, was that the elections should be postponed. The Nigerien military has reportedly arrested the mastermind of different attacks by Boko Haram in Niger’s Diffa region which is near the Nigerian border. According to Niger's Anfani private radio station, the sect member identified as Kaka Bounou, was a trader based in Diffa and goes by the alias, Captain, within the sect group. The newly posted Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 2, Joseph Mbu, on Thursday declared that the elections in his zone will be “fire for fire” if politicians play any pranks. The controversial police boss made the declaration at a meeting with police of the Ogun State Command at its Eleweran Headquarters, Abeokuta. Mr. Mbu instructed his men to be battle-ready for the election and warned politicians to have a second thought over any planned criminal act. He said if any of his men were shot, no less than twenty civilians would pay for it. “If one of my men is killed, I shall kill twenty of them but don’t shoot first,” Mr. Mbu said. “If they shoot you, shoot back in self-defence. Anybody who fires you, fire him back in self-defence.” He told his men that they were the only authority that has power to arrest, before, during and after elections. He noted that it was not compulsory for the police officers to greet even a governor who comes to vote.

Transparency International, a global coalition fighting against corruption has ranked Nigeria’s political parties as the most corrupt in the world. The group posted the graph above indicating an opinion poll they carried out on places people think political parties are mostly corrupt in the world. Top on the graph is Nigeria followed by Mexico. In Africa, only Nigeria’s political parties ranked amongst the top 11.

Members of the radical Islamist sect, Boko Haram has reportedly carried out an attack on Chadian soil.This was made known by security sources who told BBC Africa that the attacks took place in the wee hour of the night. It was reported also that this is the first attack the sect is executing in Chad since it started its uprising against the Nigerian government in 2009. According to security officials, the extremist were believed to have crossed Lake Chad by motorboat and attacked a village on the shores of the lake. Recall that Chad recently joined Nigeria, Niger, and Cameroon in a military coalition called multinational taskforce against the Boko Haram Islamist sect. A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Reuters that the terrorists were repelled and pushed back by Chadian military troops after killing several people.
