Bride set on fire and killed by groom after she slept with ex-lover on wedding night

A bride was doused with alcohol and set on fire by her new husband after she slept with an ex-lover on her wedding night, police say. Mother-of-one Veronika Filippova had sought out her former partner after her new spouse fell asleep drunk at their wedding reception. The 27-year-old had 80% burns on her body and died despite frantic efforts by doctors to save her. Continue... Eye-witnesses said Michael was shot multiple times by officer Wilson as he turned around with his hands up. Wilson claims the teenager rushed at him full speed before he opened fire. Four more Ebola patients discharged – Health Minister

Four more patients have been certified clean and discharged from the Ebola Isolation center in Lagos after undergoing treatment for the deadly disease. The four patients include two male doctors, the nurse who had earlier escaped from the isolation center and ran to Enugu and a female patient who was on admission at the time Patrick Sawyer was hospitalized at the First Consultant Hospital. The news of their discharge was disclosed in a statement released today by the Minister of Health, Prof Onyebuchi Chukwu and signed by his  his Special Assistant on Media and Communication ,  Mr. Dan Nwomeh. Medical doctors, students, consultants converged at the Lagos University Teaching hospital, (LUTH), Idi Araba, today to protest the recent sack of 16,000 resident doctors by the Federal Government. The protest was led by the Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, Dr. Tope Ojo. The doctors said their strike was never about an increase in their salary, that all they were fighting for was for better structures and equipment in hospitals across the country. EFCC Arrests Four Bankers for ATM Fraud

"Four bankers: Mansur Danlami, Ejiro Eborikpo, Nina Stephen and Samson Nwodo have been arrested by the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for conspiracy to steal the sum of N5, 100, 000 (Five Million One Hundred Thousand Naira Only) from a customer’s account.... The suspects, all staff of Zoo Road Branch of First Bank Plc allegedly conspired among themselves to issue ATM card to an impostor, in the name of Samuel Omede, a bona fide customer of the Bank in Bayelsa State. After the issuance of the purported ATM card, the impostor used the card to steal N5, 100, 000 (Five Million, One Hundred Thousand Naira Only) from Samuel Omede’s account. The Chairman of Heirs Holdings, Tony O. Elumelu has joined the struggle against Ebola in Nigeria as he has donated a whopping sum of N100 Million to help combat the disease. The contribution was made on the platform of the Tony Elumelu Foundation. This comes after Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote made a charitable donation of N150 Million, also to help fight the scourge. Mr. Elumelu’s donation will support efforts against Ebola in Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Liberia.

Ebola ALERT: Migrant bats return to Benin

Migrant bats have started to return to Benin City, the Edo State capital few weeks after the outbreak of the Ebola virus. The bats which nested in their thousands on trees at the Oba of Benin palace and surrounding trees around the city centre are also a delicacy for some persons. It was learnt that the bats started returning last week. A photographer, Stephen Idoni, runs a shop at the premises of the Oba Akenzua Cultural Centre. The shop is under a tree currently housing thousands of bats. Stephen told the Nation that the bats used to nest at what is now known as Ugbowo but said the bats have now moved to the city centre. He said he was not afraid of contacting Ebola virus from the bats nesting above his shop because the bats has been a source of meat to many persons. Prison has hardened me as a criminal - female robbery suspect tells her story

A suspected female member of a four-man robbery gang allegedly terrorising residents of Ajegunle, a suburb of Lagos, has said that she not learnt nothing from the Kirikiri prison after spending four months in the facility for selling Indian hemp and other hard drugs. Rather, she said, the prison hardened her the more and she became a worse criminal than she had been before being sentenced to jail for four months. Thirty-five-year-old Juliet Albert, a native of Utu village, Egbema Local Government Area, Rivers State, said she would not have befriended Ugochukwu, the alleged leader of the gang if she had learnt any lessons from her stay in the prison. She called on government to focus on building prisons that can reform convicts and make them better citizens when they finish their terms, noting that most convicts take Nigerian prisons as higher institutions where they learn more about crime. LAGOS — Following the recovery and discharge of the first Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) patient from the isolation centre at the Mainland Hospital in Lagos, facts have emerged as to how the patients are recovering. Meanwhile, more patients undergoing medical treatment at the centre may be discharged this week, investigations revealed. Experts, who commented on the development, said although 60-90 per cent of people infected with the Ebola virus die, some people do recover from infection. “Doctors don’t know for certain who will survive Ebola, and there is no specific treatment or cure for the disease. But studies suggest there are some biological markers linked with a higher chance of surviving Ebola,” the experts say. In the view of Derek Gatherer, a Bioinformatics researcher at Lancaster University in the United Kingdom, who studies viral genetics and evolution, “when a person becomes infected with Ebola, the virus depletes the body’s immune cells, which defend agai
