Nigerian migrant beaten to death in racist attack in Italy

Image
A Nigerian migrant was beaten to death in a racist attack by a right-wing football fan in a central Italian town, officials said Wednesday.  Emmanuel Chidi, 36, was walking with his girlfriend in the heart of the small town of Paolo Calcinora on Tuesday, when they had racial abuse heaped on them by the supporter of a local football club, the Agi news agency reported.  That led to an altercation and Chidi was brutally beaten on the head until he fell to the ground. He never recovered consciousness and died in hospital on Wednesday. “As mayor of a town that is welcoming and open to integration, I feel I’m living in a nightmare,” the town’s mayor said.  Chidi had been living in the area for eight months and was lodged in a shelter run by Catholic charity Caritas. His girlfriend had lost her baby after a perilous Mediterranean crossing. Hundreds of migrants arrive daily in Italy.  The Italian interior ministry said last week that...

My case is strongly anchored on facts - Uche Ogah.

Image
A People Democratic Party (PDP) governor elect in Abia State, Dr Uche Ogah, on Wednesday said his demand to be sworn in as the governor was not borne out of desperation. He said contrary to impression being created, his case against Governor Okezie Ikpeazu was far from being an ambush. According to him, his victory at the court is valid and not “a hurriedly executed legal ambush for the acquisition of political power as being insinuated by some persons.” “My case is strongly anchored on facts, and the refusal of Ikpeazu to respond to the core issues and his resort to propaganda speaks volumes,” Ogah said. At a briefing in Lagos through his counsel Mr Monday Ubani, Ogah said his case predated Ikpeazu’s swearing in as governor and had reached the Supreme Court before returning to the lower court. Ogah said his claim was that Ikpeazu was not eligible to participate in the primaries on the basis that he failed to pay his taxes as and when due as required by th...

How Fayose serially took bribes from Ekiti contractors –EFCC

Image
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFFC) has released the full detail of its fraud case against Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State. The details, contained in an affidavit filed by the anti-graft commission, show how N1.21 billion out of N2.26 billion paid to the account of Slyvan Mcnamara Limited, a company linked to the sons of the immediate past Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, by the Office of the National Security Adviser during the last administration, was traced to Mr. Fayose’s accounts in Zenith Bank. The affidavit, which detailed how the governor received kickbacks from Ekiti contractors, was filed in response to a suit instituted by the governor at a Federal High Court in Ado-Ekiti, seeking an order directing the EFCC to unblock his accounts with Zenith Bank. The EFCC had frozen the governor’s account after it claimed the N1.21 billion was paid into the governor’s account for the prosecution of his election in 2014. Tosin Owobo, an o...

The governor said; “EFCC opinions remain their opinions and if they are so sure of whatever information they have, they should go to court and stop subjecting Nigerians to media trial and that no amount of media trial from the same elements that orchestrated my removal in 2006 can erode my popularity among Ekiti people.” He said any property that may be linked to him or his company was bought legitimately and that his properties were duly declared in his assets declaration form and sources of such funds were not illicit. Pistorius jailed for 6 years for murdering girlfriend

Image
Oscar Pistorius, South African Paralympic champion, has been sentenced to six years in prison for the murder of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. Thokozile Masipa, the judge, who presided over the case, convicted the sportsman for murder. “It was a noble gesture of Pistorius to offer to do community service,” she held. “But punishment is not what you choose to do. It ought to be painful. A long-term imprisonment will not serve justice. “No sentence will please everyone. Nothing will bring back the deceased. The life of the accused will never be the same. He is a fallen hero … He cannot be at peace.” She said she was not surprised to hear him described as a broken man. She cited “a number of aggravating factors” in the case — including that Pistorius fired “not one but four” shots into the bathroom knowing there was someone inside. However, she disagreed with the notion that Pistorius had failed to show remorse by noting that he had tried to apologise t...
