Gusau To Jonathan: Call Your "Rude" Service Chiefs To Order

After his powers was challenged by military commanders he was appointed to supervise, Minister of Defence, Aliyu Gusau, on Tuesday sent a letter to President Goodluck Jonathan indicting his interest to quit.

The only option was for President Jonathan to call his "rude" service chiefs to order, immediately. In the letter, Mr. Gusau accused the chief of defence staff, Air Vice Marshal Alex Badeh, of being “rude” to his and his deputy, the Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, sources say.

The minister submitted a resignation letter citing insubordination after Air Chief Marshal Badeh disparaged Mr. Gusau and Mr. Obanikoro, for criticizing his failure to arrange a meeting between the new ministers and the country's service chiefs.
But it seems the Service Chiefs are right: Under the Nigerian Constitution, and the Armed Forces Act, only the President has the powers to so order and direct the military Service Chiefs the way Aliyu Gusau had wanted to do...
Even with all the powers of the President, he has to be careful in dealing with the service chiefs as they are the only people who can kick him out of power with their guns and nothing will happen.

Insiders said Gen. Gusau has, however, made it clear to President Jonathan that he will not work with military officials he considered “insubordinate”.

President Jonathan is said to be trying to make peace between the Chief of Defence Staff and Gusau to give a room for an harmonious working relationship, and avoid any "unfortunate incident" for his government.
