51 die as TransAsia Airways crash lands in Taiwan #FlightGE222 #GE222
A TransAsia Airways passenger plane crashed Wednesday into residential buildings in an emergency landing in Taiwan's Pengu Islands, killing scores of people, according to news reports.
The Taiwan news agency CNA initially put the death toll at 51 and later reported as many as 45 dead and 9 injured.
The British newspaper The Telegraphreports that the 72-seater plane was carrying 50 adults and four children.
The news agency says the twin-engine turboprop ATR 72 crashed just outside Magong airport around 7 p.m.local time.
It said Flight GE 222 took off at 5 p.m. in Kaohsiung, Taiwan's second largest city, and was scheduled to land at Magong 35 minutes later.
CNN reports that Typhoon Matmo had just left the area around the islands and that visibility was bad as the plane was trying to land.
Magong is located in Taiwan's Penghu Islands, which are also known as the Pescadores. The islands are an archipelago off the western coast of Taiwan in the Taiwan Strait.
