Lionel Messi Was Keen on Arsenal Move Before Signing New Barcelona Contract

Four-time Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi sounded out the chances of a move from Barcelona to Arsenal earlier this summer, Mail Online report.

Messi was said to be unhappy with the terms offered to him by Barcelona in a new contract at the Camp Nou, with Messi looking to assess all of his other options before he eventually penned the new deal until 2018.

The news surfaced from top Spanish website Vozpopuli, which claimed that the iconic forward asked Cesc Fabregas to talk to his agent Darren Dein about Arsenal's thoughts over the possibility of a Messi move to the Emirates.

The Barcelona number 10 had hoped Dein could have discussed a possible approach from Arsenal whilst simultaneously negotiating Fabregas' move to Chelsea.

However, due to Arsenal's strict wage structure it is thought the Gunners were not able to put an offer together to propose to Barcelona, especially as Messi's new buy-out clause now stands at £197 million and he is earning £16 million-a-year.

Messi eventually signed the new agreement with those figures with Barcelona back in May, with the problems stemming from his wish to be the highest paid player in world football. The Argentina captain has spent his entire career with the Catalan giants, winning six Spanish titles and three Champions League trophies.
