BREAKING NEWS: Nigerian government reinstates sacked resident doctors

The Nigerian government has reinstated over 16,000 resident doctors sacked August 13 in the middle of a strike called by the doctors’ union.
The Minister of Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu, announced the recall Friday. The Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, suspended its strike last week after more than a month, but insisted the sacked resident doctors be recalled.

By Thursday, the federal government insisted the decision had not been reversed. But on Friday, a spokesperson to the Minister, Dan Nwomeh, said in a tweet that the decision had been reversed and that the doctors’ reinstatement became effective Thursday. 

The resident doctors make up 70 per cent of the entire doctors workforce- including consultant specialists- workforce in government hospitals. Mr. Nwomeh said the Federal Government has lifted the suspension of the Residency Training Programme in all federal hospitals.

Resident doctors undergo the training to become consultants. Following the order, all Chief Medical Directors and Medical Directors of training centres have been directed to issue letters of reinstatement to the resident doctors, Mr. Nwomeh said. He also said that the federal government urges the doctors to view the reinstatement as a sign of goodwill to put greater commitment and dedication to their duties.
