DISASTER: Four-storey building collapses in Lagos

A newly constructed four-storey building has collapsed in Lagos. The building which is located on Landpark Street, Coker, Orile, Lagos, Sunday Sun gathered, did not claim any casualty as it was said to be vacant at the time it collapsed.
Curiously however, Sunday Sun learnt that reconstruction work has begun on the site of the collapsed building barely two weeks after it collapsed.
A source, who lives on that street and spoke to Sunday Sun on the condition of anonymity said: “We were here when the building collapsed right in our presence. In fact, we were made to understand that the owner of the building had been here early today, like two hours before the building collapsed.”
Many people have lamented the incident but expressed gratitude to God in the light of the fact that a lot of lives could have been lost had the property been already occupied by tenants.
Another source who spoke to Sunday Sun said he was surprised at the hurried manner reconstruction works resumed on the site, expressing doubts if the required inspection was done on the building by appropriate authorities before its reconstruction.
“Imagine, we even heard that the agent who is saddled with the responsibility of letting out the apartments had even started collecting money from prospective tenants and some people just came in now to remove the “to let” banner placed there. The police also came on their own and took pictures”, the source revealed.
An eyewitness said, “The building collapsed and everything about it went down. We were even there trying to take pictures but the dust was just too much that we couldn’t get better pictures.”
Sunday Sun learnt that no sooner the building collapsed than the police waded in perhaps with the intention of wading off hoodlums. “They were seen everywhere, mounting surveillance and ensuring order in the area, perhaps to prevent hoodlums, who were already moving aimlessly, from perpetrating any form of criminality.
Perhaps in an attempt to avoid being arrested, Sunday Sun gathered the the engineer in charge of the building was said to have absconded since the building collapsed as no one knows his whereabouts since the incident happened.
