It's a new Legislative day in the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu took the official prayer and led the chamber into today's proceedings.


Senator Marafa moved for the approval of Votes and Proceedings of Tuesday 13th June, 2017. Senator Godswill Akpabio seconded.

EXECUTIVE SESSION
Senate now moved into an Executive Session.

Senate resumed from its Executive Session and Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu Reported Progress that at the executive session Senate deliberated on issues bothering on the workings of the Senate and the National Assembly in general

*ANNOUNCEMENT *

Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu welcomed staffs and students who were present in the gallery to observe Plenary.

POINT OF ORDER

Senator Garba Binta Masi and Senator Ben Murray Bruce raised a point of order on the anomalities in their various constituencies.

Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu stated that the point of order would be taken on another legislative day.

PRESENTATION OF BILLS- FIRST READING

1. Federal Co-operative Colleges (Est, etc) Bill, 2017 (SB. 418) by Senator Ike Ekweremadu.

2. Federal Polytechnic Ogbomoso (Est, etc) Bill, 2017 (SB. 467) by Senator Buhari Abdulfatai.

3. Medical and Dental Practitioners Act CAP M8 LFN 2004 (Amendment) Bill, 2017 (SB. 497) by Senator Adamu Aliero.

4. Fire Arms Act CAP F28 LFN 2004 (Amendment) Bill, 2017 (SB. 489) by Senator Gbonlahan Dada.

5. Nigerian Automotive Industry Development Plan (Fiscal Incentives Assurances and Guarantees) Bill, 2017 (HB. 896) by Senator Ahmed Lawan.

MOTION

1. The need for National Unity and Peaceful Coexistence in Nigeria by all Distinguished Senators.

Senator Shehu Sani said it is not unusual in the history of a nation not to face this kind of issue, from the south, east, north and west politicians must have courage and conviction to insist that this is something we should avoid.

"Most Nations learn lessons from one civil war and coordinate their affairs as to not have another one ever. In the history of the World unity pays, Nigeria is the beauty of Africa". -Senator Olusola Adeyeye.

Senator Akpabio said across the entire country today, the forces of division have taken rise, this didn't start in just a day, the respect we enjoy all over the World today is as a result of our unity and size. Senator Godswill Akpabio also stated that look at a Country like Sudan, with all their wealth they can't enjoy it again because they are at war,Some people have not witnessed civil war before, i did.

"Staying together in this country is more useful to us all, we should stay together".- Senator Emmanuel Paulker.

"We should go back to our various constituencies and talk to our people against hate speech"- Senator Philip Aduda.

"Are we truly patriotic as Nigerians?, let us then give every region in this country equal opportunities".-Senator Garba Binta Masi.

"As senators we are elders of this country and we should talk to our children".-Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe.

"This is a time to unite not to fight in this country. We must not be seen supporting the forces trying to divide the country".-Senator Kwankwaso.

Senator Tejuoso said we should encourage our religious leaders to spread the message of ONE NIGERIA to all their followers.

"Nigeria right from inception was made by God's wisdom to have its diversity".-Senator Barnabas Gemade.

Senator Biodun Olujimi said in Senate, we work together and keep all differences aside to promote the development of Nigeria. She cited our first National anthem that though tribe and tongue may differ, in brotherhood we stand.

"What Nigerians don't know is that the time to split is gone, our youths take it easy, we need this country as one". -Senator James Manager.

Senator Ovie Omo-Agege said the reason for this agitation must be looked into.

"Our diversity is our challenge and it is also our greatest strength".-Senator Magnus Abe.

"What people outside Nigeria see in Nigeria, we in Nigeria don't see".-Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

Senator Emmanuel Bwacha said in this country alot of people think the best way to be heard is to issue out threats.

Senator Chukwuka Utazi said the problem of this country is the leadership of this country. He stated that if the United State of America can swallow her pride and allow BarackObama be president, I don't see reasons why Nigerians need people base on regions.

"We swore to uphold the Constitution of Nigeria, the Constitution is to live as one indivisible people".-Senator Mao Ohuabunwa.

"I'm one of those who fought in the civil war and I totally stand for the unity of Nigeria. We should revisit the National Conference Recommendation".-Senator Jonah Jang.

Deputy Senate President Ike Ekwerenadu said i believe that the patriotism that has been displayed is one thing that stand this Senate out, This is a time to show leadership as leaders. He stated that it is the law that guide us,this is the time for the government to apply the law so that people don't take laws into their hands.

Senate resolved to:

1. Convey the commitment of all Nigerian citizens that we live together in unity and harmony as one indivisible, indissoluble sovereign Nation under God,

2. Urge all Nigerians to desist from actions and utterances that are capable of jeopardizing the corporate exostence of our dear Nation,

3. That the leadership of the Senate do facilitate distinguished Senators to intensify their representative role by embarking on sensitization campaign in various constituencies to highlight the importance of harmonious and Peaceful Coexistence, and

4. Urge the Federal Government to direct the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation and other relevant Agencies to intensify enlightenment and advocacy of loyalty to the Nation.

Additional Prayer:

Senate to urge security agencies to ensure prompt execution of anybody making any utterance capable of dividing Nigeria.

Urge Federal Government as a matter of urgency to send the last National Conference Report to the National Assembly for deliberation.

ADJOURNMENT

Senate Leader moved that other items on the Order paper be stood down to another Legislative day. Minority Leader seconded.

Plenary is adjourned to Thursday, 15h June, 2017.
